Mixing up your taser with your handgun

The only tragedy is she grabbed a gun instead of taser, and failed realize the mistake until she triggered what she thought was the taser.

Maybe it would be more believable if the target wasn't an unarmed black person because those persons get killed by cops a lot with excuses like:

“I thought it was my taser”
“I thought it was my apartment”
“I thought I saw him/her with a gun”
“I thought he was selling loosies”
“I thought she was there alone”
“I thought she was getting smart with me”

Maybe they should just stop panicking around unarmed black people and be calm just like they are around white people armed with AR-15.

So if she shot a white man by mistake, then she is to believed and walk free, if she shot a black man by mistake, it just sucks to be her?

No shit. I can't find the video today, but a way long time ago, there was a famous video of a white state trooper, standing calmly trying to give a white old man a traffic ticket as the old man yelled at him for several minutes. 

Yet Floyd simply says he is scared, ends up dead.

 But it doesn't matter. Her mistake cost someone their lives. If I take my eyes off the road while driving, and pop a curb, and kill someone, I can be charged for that death, even if it was an accident. 

And it isn't the politically correct thing to say, it is a litteral real reality that blacks and other minorities have far more to fear when getting pulled over than whites. I've been pulled over twice for an expired tag. Neither time was I asked to get out of the car, nor did I fear dying.

The victim in this case had an outstanding warrant for arrest.  That seems to be ample justification to require him to get out of his car.

The victim in this case had no real reason to fear dying, which makes his resisting arrest and effectively bolting rather less than defensible.   The officer also didn’t seem to have intended to apply force excessive by popular conventional or procedural standards.   Again  there is no indefensible conduct.

I don’t believe an eye must be answered for by another eye.    So I don’t think placating the family or the community should be a concern in how Kim Potter is dealt with.

In so far as she might be charged with any crime, it would be the same crime she would be charged with if, as a licensed driver, one day she nevertheless accidentally shifted her own car into reverse by mistake on her war to shopping and ran over and killed a bystander standing behind her car.

The warrent was not for a violent crime. If you fail to pay your parking tickets and don't show up for court, you can have a warrent issued against you too. I would hardly think that killing someone over traffic tickets is the same as a warrent for Ted Bundy.

It definitely makes sense to have different designs between a handgun and a taser.  Given that both are most likely worn on the side of the dominant hand, there needs to be something tactile that would signal a difference.

If the issue is these two items are so similar that even a supposedly well-trained officer grabs the wrong one, something needs to be changed.

If this guy was in question that a police officer claimed she was so startled that she made the mistake of pulling out a real gun instead of teaser gun I would find it easier to believe it.

I have a design suggestion, but not for tasers.

Cover the grips of police-issue firearms with hundreds of needles so that it is impossible to draw the gun without jabbing yourself. This will accomplish two things: 1) it will be impossible to mistake a gun for a taser and 2) it will eliminate ‘accidental’ shootings. If a cop can draw, aim, and fire a sidearm with hundreds of needles jabbing him/her in the hand, anyone that gets cop-shot probably deserved it.

They shoot bystanders by mistake anyway. With the needles, they’re less likely to draw the gun in the first place.
