The company's Nova-C lander, dubbed Odysseus, lifted off shortly after 1 a.m. EST (0600 GMT) atop a two-stage Falcon 9 rocket flown by Elon Musk' SpaceX from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.

Lab-grown ‘beef rice’ could offer more sustainable protein source, say creators

Quote:Bowls of decidedly pink-tinged rice are about to feature on sustainable food menus, according to researchers who created rice grains with beef and cow fat cells grown inside them.

Scientists made the experimental food by covering traditional rice grains in fish gelatin and seeding them with skeletal muscle and fat stem cells which were then grown in the laboratory.

After culturing the muscle, fat and gelatin-smothered rice for nine to 11 days, the grains contained meat and fat throughout, resulting in an end product the researchers believe could become a nutritious and flavourful food.

Prof Jinkee Hong, who led the work at Yonsei University in South Korea, cooked and tasted the beef-cultured rice, which he hopes will be a more affordable source of protein than traditional beef, with a much smaller carbon footprint.

Quote:Former Rep. Tom Suozzi (D) has won back his old seat in the House, giving Democrats a critical pickup that will further narrow the GOP House majority, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.

Suozzi defeated Republican Mazi Pilip in the special election to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.), who was expelled from his seat in December in the aftermath of criminal charges being filed against him and the many false claims he made about his background.

The race was seen as an important bellwether heading into the November general election, as New York will be key to Democrats’ strategy to win back control of the House. The 3rd Congressional District is one of five in the state that voted for Biden in 2020 but elected a Republican representative in 2022.

This makes, what, three elections of one sort or another the GOP has lost since the Dobbs decision overturning RvW. And while NY is a blue state, the other two, KS and OH, are red ... and still acted to protect abortion access.

If the Dems don't paste Repubs with this decision, they deserve to lose in 24.

Worth noting that the district Suozzi won is Republican. Most of Long Island is. But name recognition is a big thing on LI, Long Islanders love their local politicians. Suozzi is a big name, locally. Same with Peter King before he retired, even Dems in Nassau County loved him.

I don't have a link but I heard about this twice on my way to and from the office today so I made sure to listen closely the second time around.

A man here in Texas is in jail charged with killing his girlfriend. She became pregnant, he wanted her to have the baby, she did not want to have the baby. She went to Colorado for an abortion. He killed her for that. And the kicker - and reason it was on the news today: His bail has been lowered to less than half of what it was originally set for because she had an abortion.

smh

This makes me even more amazed in considering Santos.

Never lived in NY, this is an angle I hadn't considered. Thanks for bringing it up.
