So are we back to saying that initialism are a sub-category of acronym, which is a sub-category of abbreviation?

So, a true acronym (an acronym acronym) is like NATO, but an initialism acronym is like BBC? And both are abbreviations. Which seems fair.

Also, can you double-check whether you agree with Boru's knowing that I had read your posted OED entry wrong, or was he mistaken about what he knew for sure about my reading ability? I'm pretty confused at this point.
