RE: The Catch-All Botany Thread
Now that is some good stuff, looks like Tor1p and Gcn2p are prime candidates for tinkering.

RE: The Catch-All Botany Thread
I read in an article that plants also perform quantum computations to convert sunlight into energy. An exciton (or a quantum particle of energy) in a plant does something called a "quantum walk" by taking many possible paths through a forest simultaneously.
This is something too nerdy which I don't understand for the most part, but it still sounds cool to me. ![]() Quote:When sunlight hits the part of the bacteria that collects sunlight, it creates a quantum particle of energy called an exciton. That exciton must travel through a complex that Lloyd likens to a gigantic forest in order to get to a place where it can be turned into chemical energy. Whoosh! You've moved out of my realm of nerdosity, Rayaan!
Very interesting article!

RE: The Catch-All Botany Thread
There we go.
http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/0805...2741v2.pdf To make a long (potentially boring) story short. These researchers believe that the data they have collected allows them to come to the conclusion that photosynthesis, at least in those subjects studied, may levarge a quantum walk to transfer energy. This would be useful if it could be exploited to increase the effeciency in energy transer among photosynthetic organisms( plants that are engineered to mature at incredible rates) or in "engineering artificial photosystems". Pretty much the silver bullet of our energy troubles. Lets see how it pans out. |
