I've been to just about any type of religious service you care to imagine. Even had a little fun at Pineridge, so I've been around the block. Why not go?
(btw, I live in KY myself, wanna go to a holy roller service with me? You afraid of snakes? Conversely, I could take you to some catholic services so pagan you'd swear they weren't christian.)

I went to a church a couple of months ago for a pre-school awards ceremony for my girlfriend's youngest. Had no idea going in that there was going to be a service along with the awards. My skin was crawling the whole time I sat there.
Total waste of time.

I'm forced to go to church too. I heard a priest say that god doesn't like it when you force someone to go to church instead god wants you to encourage them. I told my parent they are going to hell.

I used to go to church and the only thing it changed was to convince me that I hate church and all the dumb motherfuckers who go there.

That had nothing to do with my attendance of said awards ceremony. She is also an atheist, but the bible-thumper daycare was closest to her house (within two blocks) & much nicer than the other two options around her area.

Nothing offered in ministry in any church speaks truth to atheists. So, for someone who is a Theist to suggest attending a sermon may just change our mind about things, is to say firstly, that they want you to attend church so they can respect you more than they do now, when you're an atheist.
And secondly they're saying, if you but agree to sit in on a sermon, we're confident you'll renounce the truth and choose to live a lie.
That's not exactly a brilliant advertisement for what happens when someone crosses the threshold of a church.

I have gone to church many times, and different churches, mostly weddings etc. It doesn't affect me the slightest, just "Boooring [/homer simpson]".
I even read scripture in my nephew's baptism, by my sister request, noticed nothing different except for my friends were admired because I did it, to witch I responded "I am an atheist, not a demon or vampire lol", although I stressed my opinion to my sister about baptism before.
I can understand why an atheist won't go to church, eg utterly useless, etc, but if the reason not to go was foolish pride, then I would be just as intolerant as fundies.

Tolerance is highly over rated.
We only tolerate what we otherwise can not condone.
Family asking an atheist to attend a meaningful ritual to their side of the family, out of love and respect for, as you mentioned, a nephew's baptism, is not something I'd say one has to tolerate. It's family. It's a little baby boy who's family, while Theists, love him and you enough to make you part of what matters most in the moment to all their lives. Knowing you're an atheist, at that. That's love. That's family.
Tolerance comes into play, as I see it, when someone asks me to attend church because they think it'll save my soul from their god's wrath, because he never provided any evidence I could accept as reason to know for a fact he exists. Rather, I'm asked to take it on faith something never proven to exist, save by the repeated affirmations afforded by it's followers, does.
As in the OP, asking me to sit and listen to someone administer scripture that's supports the irrational isn't something I need to tolerate, because those who would know I'm atheist don't example tolerance for letting me live my life as I see fit, because I choose not to accept their faith is credible enough to live my life by.

Miles, have you been to church? Did you enjoy it, did it convert you? If you answered yes, no and no, I say fuck it and don't go. Somehow I doubt it has improved a lot since last time, and I can come up with so many more meaningful and fun things one can do during two hours. 
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human.
