Lignite strip mining protests
We've talked about the mind-boggling Excavator 288 which is in use at the Garzweiler strip mine a stone's throw from where I live. Well, now some people decided to party like it's 1985!
Down with the CO2! Yeah...

Provide synopsis translation please. You'd think with Brewer as a last name I'd be a better german, but sadly not.

You should retrain your police a bit.  They are straying a little bit toward American police practices, and you don't want that.  Here is a Google translated bit:

Quote:Alliance criticized police violence

Martin Weis, spokesman for the protest alliance "end area", had the "gruff" criticized police operation in Garzweiler on Saturday. The demonstrators had only "practiced civil disobedience", while police have used pepper spray and batons. One journalist was injured. Activists have been rounded up. According to Weis were 1,500 protesters on site. On Sunday the protests in Garzweiler should continue. The protest camp will continue until Monday (17/08/2015). The Alliance wants to demonstrate with the protests against the climate-damaging lignite. Before the world climate summit in December in Paris the pressure on politicians to be increased, in view of climate change more switch to renewable energy.

Sooooo, do the protesters have an alternative for power generation that they can support?

Well, already 25% or so of German electricity are renewable, and there is still potential. No, we can't simply switch off all lignite plants (which are worse than coal) and most renewable has a problematic variability, but we're working on it. If you asked me we shouldn't have exited from nuclear as hastily after fukushima.

I'm good with that. Every country needs to be moving in that direction. I agree theat the early exit from nuke power was probably a mistake. I remember reading an article (I think in Discovery or Omni) that promoted smaller nuke generators (don't remember the specifics on size) because they would be less expensive to build/operate and the design had a lower catastrophic failure potential.

Huh?

The protest isn't in China? WTF . .
The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
