Man up, act like a man, and be a real man are all phrases that disgust me. I get your point. They're phrases that are used and not necessarily even referring to a man when you say them, but the sentiment behind them is stupid.

Whenever I hear this phrase said to me... it's like instantly the biggest cringe ever and in my head I hear a very loud "Ughhhhhhhhhh!".

I can see how some people might view the phrases "Be a man about it." or "Be a woman about it." as negative. Some, such as myself simply see it as meaning "Quit being silly, weak and/or indecisive."
