We did an actual perm on the back right quarter panel of our maniquins last night.
The first picture shows the perm rods in a bricklay pattern. The second picture is the final result. The third picture is the left back quarter panel untouched for a comparison (sort of like a before and after shot).

For pretty much the same reasons they get their hair colored or lightened. We like to make changes in our appearance. I'm currently sporting fashion colors of pink and purple in my hair, although most of it is washed out now so it looks more like I have pastel colors in there, but still, point is, I wanted a change.

I suppose for the same reasons some women prefer to have straight hair instead of curly.
No matter how we are the cosmetic industries will spend millions of dollars in ads to tell us that we are flawed.
So they can sell tanning cream to light skinned people, skin bleach for dark skinned people, lotions to hide freckles, fake freckles for those who don't have any, straightener for curly hair, perms for straight hair. It's not really about what looks best, it's about convincing people that they don't look best so they'll give you their monies.
