One time, it was snowing & foggy and I could only see 5 meters. I imagined I was in some sort of creature flick, with my head lamp lighting up the eyes of monsters in the mist on the wayside (it may have been wild boar, the forest is full of them around here)

Our backyard right now literally consists of a 30 foot cliff on top of which the forest starts.
Fortunately, HD sits basically on the Odenwald. I grew up on the opposite side of the Rhine valley, a few hundred meters from the largest continuous forest in the country and I feel a bit incomplete if I don't have one nearby. Germans and their forests are a special relationship anyways. Visiting the forest has a somewhat mystical cultural significance and tradition that's hard to describe. I think it harkens back to the German romanticism of the 19th century.
