Can we build AI without losing control over it? | Sam Harris

Well he gave the analogy of the way we disregard ants. If the AI became far more intelligent than ourselves then it may treat us with similar disregard.

So, do you know how an actual AI will act and look like when (if) it becomes a reality?

I'd source it for you, again, but we saw how fruitful that was the last go round.

But he doesn't describe it in the video. This is the point I am getting at. And nor can he because we don't know what form the AI will take. It's a case of "oooh AI scary!"

i.e. fear mongering

So come on, you tell me how AI can be a threat. Let's discuss each hypothetical scenario.

Yeah but how will AI be a threat?

Bears don't just see us as ants, they see us as food. I don't see much of a bear apocalypse going on right now.

I see you still haven't read Bostrom's work on the matter, since I last directed you to it, Mathilda.

That's because we outsmart them.

As for how, it's simple. Faulty programming.

Yeah there's a reason for that.

I don't like to waste my time.

I'm quoting the quote to add another question. How likely is it in this fictional scenario that an AI, created by humans, surpasses human intellect? How should that work, apart from processing power, energy and self repair routines needed, since the AI is a threat in this scenario. So it can't expect to be serviced by humans.

So the smart toaster becomes faulty and stops working? The self driving car needs to be rebooted? Yeah. Definite apocalypse there.

No not faulty. Like why do people kill ants? Because most people have more important things on their minds and don't give a shit. They're pests.

We're talking about a distant future where AI is far more smart than us, has a mind of its own and has its own interests.
