Four kids & mom of Catholic family die in a house fire.
March 5, 2017 at 8:11 pm
The fire appears to have been caused by a wood stove:

The dad and his daughter survived. The home may not have had working smoke detectors.

Somehow I feel suspicious. Like if two people survived, they all should really have gotten out one way or another. How hard is it to get out of a house when a room catches fire? And who doesn't have working smoke detectors?

In the smoke, the confusion, and the searing heat in your lungs? Pretty fucking hard, sometimes.

Poor people, careless people.

Zoiks. I went to college just across the line in Vermont. Sad news. And yes, it can be hard. Look at Oakland (many more people, but same circumstances, it seems.

Ok, maybe not quite so suspicious. Very tragic either way.

Well, when I was a fireman, one thing we were trained for is the "instinct" of children to "hide" from the fire under the bed or in the closet, which is clearly a fatal course absent active searching.
It's entirely possible that the mother went back in and gave her life trying to find her children.
I sure feel bad for that family. What a devastating loss no matter their faith, or lack thereof.

So, what do the family's Catholicism and their death in a house fire have to do with one another? And really, for the average person who doesn't know these people, what separates them from the approximately seven people who die in a house fire in America every day?

Wood stoves, clothes dryers, bad wiring, common threads in many fires.
Rural areas around here were very slow to get building code inspection requirements so there is a tremendous amount of 'grandfathered' crap that is not to code. Heck, the original part of my house has cloth 14 ga wiring in places.

Wood stoves are dangerous, especially, those located on the second floor of a home. But, such is the mentality of some conservative religious folk.

Wood fire stoves on the second floor of a home are a religious thing??
This entire thread confuses me. But mostly, just sad to read. The survivors will surely suffer greatly, too.
