Context of situation matters. If you are isolated in a closed situation, say school or work, places you really have no choice to be in, and words or actions that are unwanted and repeated, you cant simply say "let it roll off of your back". Same with any minority worldwide. It is far easier for a majority of any group to sluff something off, but much harder for someone who doesn't fit into that majority.

Gays atheists and non Muslims in parts of the east don't have the luxury of "it's just words", mobs and state law can harm them in a real physical sense. But even in America, even today those words you say cant harm people do harm people.

I'd only say letting it roll off your back only works in an equal situation where both parties have the equal opportunity to leave that situation. Nobody has the right to be free from being offended, but I think your post is an oversimplification of reality. Bullies do exist, from a schoolyard level to even a political ideological leader level. 

It depends on the context of the situation.

To the OP: The problem for me is that regarding my own temper & anger sometimes, I just do not WANT to grow up. It gives me a feeling of satisfaction and minor release of frustration, depending indeed on the context of the situation, to just use the most terrible name-calling versus my "attacker".....I'm probably still a little boy, but holy shit it can help me having a better mood the rest of day !

In my native language we have the most bizarre cursing and name-calling. In Dutch we even go so far by using terrible deceases like cancer, AIDS, Herpes in front of a cursing word...FOr example, as OP's example "faggot", we (seriously) place "cancer" in front "faggot", leading to "cancer-faggot".....And If I explain this ti UK speaking ppl, they are completely in shock and call the Dutch sick ppl. they are quite right, I agree.

I like to tack on to the old saying- "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me... so I'm gonna let words hurt me as a stand in for sticks and stones."

Its something that almost needs to stay unspoken. When that guy spray painted the n word across LeBron's house, his intent was to hurt him and his family. His intent to do harm is the main thing. Because we've all decided to let words harm us, that guy's job was done. He did the harm. But if we all agreed that words have no power over us one way or the other, he may have decided to do real harm to Lebron and his family.

Vandalism is real harm.
