I personally think the design of the Defiant is a rather nondescript lump that lacks character or panache, and devoid of visual cue that speaks of spaciness or slick technology based on contemporary styling sensibility. It is one of the worse primary spacecraft prop designs in the history of the star trek franchise.
In my opinion, from the perspective of prop design, the enterprise from the motion picture remains by far the best in the history of the franchise. It was mean to be a warship. It's rather unfair to expect such a ship to have the same general mock up as a vessel intended for long distance exploration. Form follows function, mate. Boru
