In 1774, Frederick the Great ordered Prussians to grow potatoes as a hedge against famine. Peasants thought of potatoes as disgusting and refused. In response, Frederick had the Royal Potato Fields planted and patrolled by guards. However, the guards were under orders to be less than vigilant in their duties, to the point of letting people go who were caught stealing potatoes and even accepting bribes from those who wanted to steal the tubers. The result was the creation of the impression that potatoes were valuable, but remarkably easy to steal. His plan turned spuds into a major food crop.

Marketing genius, that man.

I have a new one that I took when we filled in my MiL's pool. You can have it for the cost of shipping. It would probably arrive cracked, though. Panic

Gee thanks.   Dodgy

I got in touch with the seller and it's already at the Fedex location to be returned and then they will send another one.

Since the walk to our front door runs along the wall of my office, I know when Fedex delivers packages...I hear the THUD whenever a delivery is here from Chewy.com.  I'm sure the pool pump was delivered with same delicate handling.   Dodgy Dodgy

Heh, reminds me of the video showing the delivery guys dropping a 40-something-inch TV over the wall into the customer's "yard", which was concrete in that area.

Then again, I was working in Florida and had a bunch of stuff shipped back. One item was a tool box. When I bought it, I saved the shipping box so that when I went back home I could use it. When it arrived home, the FEDEX delivery dork put it on the porch, upside-down. I pointed it out to the dork, and his only comment was that I should just file a claim. Never mind that it had two arrows on each side pointing up, with words to that effect. I had to do body and fender work to get it open. Dodgy

Being knighted confers upon you the right to own a sword (a holdover from an earlier era). Some knights take this more seriously than others.

When Sir Terry Pratchett was knighted, he dug up his own iron ore, learned to smelt, smelted the ore, added a bit of meteoric iron, learned to forge, and forged himself a Starmetal sword.

Just how cool can one person get?

TIL that here in Mexico, that what appears to be a two lane (each way) highway has in fact three lanes and that right lane drivers are expected to use the shoulder and left lane drivers are expected to straddle the center line to allow speeders to pass on the left.

Drive defensively, amigos.
