That Gay Thread
RE: That Gay Thread
(December 1, 2021 at 2:03 am)Rev. Rye Wrote: Given the context in the screenshot, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that they were referring to their refusal to fit within the gender binary. Teacher identifies as neither “Mr.” nor “Mrs.”, that’s certainly something that first-graders can pick up on as something unusual.
Also, I'll point they say in another post their students are aware they are gay because they have met their wife

Quote:My students know about and have met my wife at school, they know I’m queer, and the turtles will call ANYBODY out for calling me “mrs” anything. I told them my story once & never needed to say it again. If only adults adjusted as quickly and easily, it may save many of our lives.
I see no problem with this straight teachers are allowed to talk about their families so why shouldn't gay people be allowed to. Gay relationships aren't just about sex.

RE: That Gay Thread
And here's a thread from the Professor's Twitter page in response to the tweet:

Quote:Okay so now I need to make a #thread about the difference between identity and sexuality, because either the vast majority of these humans are not that smart, or folks really just don’t understand. I’m choosing to act inside my values and trust the best intentions. Please allow me to preface by saying I am speaking for myself. I cannot and do not speak for the experiences of other people across genders, races, sexualities, abilities or any other category my lived experience may overlap with. When I said my students ask about my queerness, I means my literal, objective queerness. The word queer meaning unfamiliar, peculiar, strange even. Especially strange to children who are predominantly being shaped by a boy/girl binary. They will always have questions. I would never speak with a child about anything sex-related without the prior consent and appointment of my school, my scholars’ parents, and the scholars themselves. y’all disgust me with your attempts to collapse perversion onto queerness as if that conversation is new. please. The questions I referred to are from 6 year olds. It’s not as deep as many of you have processed this. Questions are about my haircut, the clothes I wear, how I have a wife etc. I’m different than many of them have ever seen, especially so after a virtual kindergarten year. Those questions speak to what make me different than the way they were socialized to perceive me. It doesn’t mean that I am having conversations about sex in my classroom. Don’t be egregiously absurd. Queerness as a gender identity has nothing to do with who I sleep with or what body parts I have, nor would I ever discuss such a thing with children. It is your own internalized perversion that you’re upset with, not me. My school, students and their parents know me and my wife and they support me as an educator. My students love me dearly and I work hard daily to continue sustaining a healthy relationship with them in return.

Well damn, there were literally only two sentences, and you apparently didn't bother to read the second, where the person stated "I teach all subjects as a first grade teacher, but my FAVORITE moments are ALWAYS when my students ask about my queerness.".

No, where did it "explicitly" say they didn't want their gender referenced?

I guess that's a no. Cool

I'm convinced that education is the magic bullet, that's why I think the question is reasonable. I'm not talking about getting qualifications.  Even high school can teach you critical thinking if you have good teacher and pay attention.

It isn't. You can set people like Huggy down in a classroom for their entire lives and see no appreciable change.

They all went to school, and here they are, as they are, after all.
