2024 US Presidential Election
RE: 2024 US Presidential Election
I simply cannot comprehend how people can listen to Trump and come to the conclusion that he's their guy.

He made his point, though, that it's unfair of us to hold Lee (and other defenders of slavery, by extension) in disfavor. That was his real point in that disjointed ramble through fantasy.

He's only their guy because of how much he gets under our skin.

Not only that, he is their hero, so to speak. However, like those who call Biden “not their president”, Trump is not anyone else’s hero, period.

Plus, anti-slavery or not, Robert E. Lee was still with the South to fight for his state, Virginia. To me, being anti-slavery is not enough to keep him from being remembered as a good guy when he sided with the South, the Confederates, who were basically traitors to the USA, by the way.

Probably because it's right out there on the surface, and easily missed when we set out to find some other underlying cause or meaning.  White separatists know he's their guy because he talks about their guys.  Trump affirms identitarian whiteness openly and often.   I think it might be the only thing he does as consistently as crime.

Tying this into thumps comments - and if we remember that lee is the human prototype for the lost cause revisionism of the civil war, they are having a real intimate moment with him, despite the rally settings.  It's not about it being unfair to hold lee in disfavor, it's about it being unfair to hold them in disfavor.  I'd say it's equally fair and also uncomfortable to do both - which is why The Whites are wilding out in the first place.

The uncomfortable thing for us is to just let it be what it so clearly is.  I know that we imagine that the trumpists can't all be white separatists.  I suppose in a way that doesn't matter that's probably true.  Maybe they aren't in it for the white separatism......but if so....it's still something they'd take along with whatever else they think a trump presidency will get them.  In that context, those who (at least publicly) mount their trumpism on kitchen table issues have been bought more cheaply than any of the rest of that basket of deplorables.  Facilitating a new confederacy over the price of a gallon of gas.

Lee is said by some to have opposed slavery, but the fact is that he owned them, and the state he was fighting for seceded in order to preserve the right of whites to own others.

Lee too was a traitor to the United States, taking up arms against the nation he swore to defend. Although I'm sure that, like Hitler, Lee loved his dog.

On that first part, I should have known how fishy his being anti-slavery was, so thanks for mentioning that.

But yes, Lee was a traitor, along with the other confederates. I do wonder if he really wanted to defend the United States like he swore to? Doubtful, at least to me. Still, if one is for the United States, they would not side with the traitors, and he did.

I don't. He graduated near the top of his West Point class. He served honorably for over three decades, including combat in Mexican-American War. The fact that he resigned his commission in order to fight for the Confederacy speaks to a feeling that the right to own another human being was more important to him than the honorable three decades' of service.

Makes sense. Perfect sense in fact. Also, it is no surprise that Trump, another traitor, would talk about someone like Lee like that, when Lee was not all so great like how Trump isn’t.

Lee may have switched gears but at least he didn't claim bone spurs. He actually served the country before becoming someone less than honorable.

Trump has always been a spoiled little, foot-stamping toddler.
