RE: In your opinion what causes christians to believe in Jesus

There's at least one type of beliefs that can be strongly and reliably traced back to childhood. Guess which kind?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

That's particularly hilarious when written by somebody claiming to be a psychologist.
Permanently influenced? Do you think you've ever been permanently influenced by a piece of text before?
Yes.

Clearly I am the same blank slate that I was born, all change the result of internal processes.

The words that I used were "permanently influenced", but that's just semantics.

Then what good are they? These words that you wrote that are apparently useless? Why do you write them at all? Sheer reflexive instinct?
Quote:These are cartoonish descriptions of language and persuasion.
Well, you'll be happy to know that you've persuaded me that you wouldn't know the workings of a human mind if it jumped up and bit you on the arse. Thank you greatly for the belly laugh.

I no longer believe John might be a good-faith actor. I think he is here to muddy the waters for his own agenda. He really just admitted as much IMO.
I know he isn't. He's not blocked yet, but he's certainly trolling and merits little attention other than the occasional head-shot.
If you have to lie and misrepresent in order to present your views, are those views even worthy of presenting? Our esteemed Psychologist Extraordinaire apparently hasn't considered that. Maybe he thinks Jesus likes a little bit of lying, on the side?

This changed me forever:
Donne Wrote:No man is an island,
Entire of itself;
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less,
As well as if a promontory were:
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were.
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
Funny that a professed Christian should deny the power of these words.

I admit to not having followed this thread as closely as I probably should have. That being said, I'd like to ask John a serious question:
In your opinion, what causes people to believe in Jesus?
I ask this because I don't recall you having answered the question posed in this thread. You've used up a lot of space objecting to other peoples' answers, so I was wondering if you had one of your own.

I don't buy the idea that he is a trained psychologist either. For one thing, he would know how to converse with others much better than he does.

What are words good for? Social coordination. Does that include persuasion? Yes, but not the cartoonish version of it that you think exists.

Now Johnny wants to talk nonesense about words
