Sex-abuse priest’s promotion draws attacks on Catholic Church

A French archbishop’s decision to promote a priest who was sentenced to jail for raping a teenaged boy has drawn new condemnation of the Roman Catholic Church for its record on sex abuse.

Victim support groups and traditionalists have expressed outrage over the case of Dominique Spina, who was found guilty of raping a 16-year-old boy in 2006 and sentenced to five years in prison.

The archbishop of Toulouse, Guy de Kerimel, set off the controversy in June when he named Spina as diocesan chancellor, putting him in charge of archives.

The canonical code lays down that the chancellor must be “of honest reputation and above all suspicion”.

Because of the sensitivity of the topic, Catholic leaders have been reluctant to speak publicly, but one bishop told AFP, on condition of anonymity, that the appointment was “a great shame” for the Church.

In a joint statement, several groups of victims of sexual abuse in Catholic schools expressed their “deep indignation” and “anger” at the appointment.

France’s Catholic Church is already reeling from several sexual scandals in schools it runs and accusations of longtime sexual abuse made against Abbe Pierre, once an icon of the defense of the poor who died in 2007.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

and is anyone surprised by this?   It's only child rape, nothing to get upset about!

Thai woman, 35, 'filmed herself having sex with Buddhist monks and blackmailed them for millions of pounds'

Wilawan Emsawat, 35, known by the nickname Sika Golf, is accused of being involved in secret relationships with 13 monks, as well as money laundering and receiving stolen goods.

Emsawat reportedly raked in almost a staggering £9million after using video footage and images of her encounters with senior religious figures to extort money.

Five mobile devices owned by the woman contained clips and stills of her engaged in sexual acts with several monks, some of whom were still wearing their traditional orange robes, according to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), which was quoted in local Thai media.

Currently, nine-out-of-13 monks involved have been disrobed, and the number of individuals involved is expected to increase.

A committee in the senate has now called for sex with monks to be made a crime, but the proposal has angered those who say that men should be held responsible for their own actions.

'The scandal exposes a system of lies and hypocrisy among top monks,' Sanitsuda Ekachai, a columnist for the Bangkok Post, wrote.

'Women have long been depicted in mainstream teachings as "enemies" of monks' spiritual purity… and now, when the clergy's moral decay is in full view, it's the woman who takes the fall while the monks are cast as victims.'

Investigators from Thailand's CIB believe the scandal stretches far beyond moral failings and may involve large-scale financial corruption.

Records from Wilawan's bank accounts reportedly show a jaw-dropping £8.8million in transactions over the past three years. Authorities suspect a significant portion of that came from temple funds.

Wilawan is also said to have blown huge sums on illegal online gambling sites.

Police Major General Charoonkiat Pankaew, who is leading the investigation, said his team is meticulously reviewing each video to identify 'monastic unchastity'.

Respected columnist Ekachai wrote: 'Monks must ask themselves: Why did they enter monkhood? For spiritual training, or to climb the social ladder and gain wealth and power through the saffron robe?

'This is structural rot rooted in a clergy strong on authoritarian control but weak on monastic discipline. It's the bitter fruit of a system that has drifted far from the Buddha's path.'

The case has sent shockwaves through the Buddhist world and raised urgent questions about transparency, discipline, and the growing cracks beneath the surface of Thailand's religious elite.

Roanoke priest accused in Florida lawsuit of sexual abuse

A Roanoke priest has been accused in a Florida lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy in the early 2000s. Father George Zina is currently a priest at St. Elias Catholic Church Maronite Center in Roanoke.

The lawsuit is seeking $10 million in damages. Zina is not a defendant in the lawsuit. It accuses the Diocese and churches of negligence for failing to prevent the alleged sexual abuse.

“We believe that the Diocese and these churches were negligent. Meaning that they knew or should’ve known that Zina was unsafe and they failed to protect our client, who was a parishioner and a child,” said Jenny Rossman, trial attorney for Herman Law, which is representing the plaintiff in the lawsuit.

“Zina even went so far as to tell him, when he was a child, that God blessed Zina to be in a same-sex relationship with an altar boy. You know he’s a kid, and this is somebody that his family trusted,” said Rossman. This claim is also stated in the lawsuit.

Robert’s ‘zero tolerance’ position on clerical sex abuse is going no where very fast.

Quote:Pontiff maintains public silence as fresh explosion of clerical sex abuse scandals makes headlines

Pope Leo XIV is embracing a non-interventionist policy in tackling clerical sex abuse, even in prominent cases when a bishop has promoted a convicted predator priest and the Vatican has reinstated a cleric convicted of child pornography.

While Leo is drawing thousands of tourists to papal audiences at his summer residence, a fresh eruption of clerical sex abuse scandals in Europe is prompting victims and their advocates to question Leo’s inaction on the issue of sexual misconduct among priests.

Leo has yet to respond to a leading German victim support organization asking him to include laymen and women in the Dicastery for Doctrine of the Faith to help deal with abuser priests; the 18 priests in the DDF, they say, “cannot prosecute cases of abuse all over the world.”

Eckiger Tisch, who expressed outrage over the Cologne archdiocese’s refusal to compensate Melanie F, a girl whom Fr. Hans Ue adopted as foster daughter and repeatedly raped, resulting in two abortions, has also asked Leo to open the Vatican archives to inquiries.

In a July 11 op-ed, The Pillar questioned Leo’s non-intervention after Catholics expressed outrage over the promotion of Fr. Dominique Spina, a French priest who was sentenced in 2005 to four years in jail for raping a 16-year-old boy in the early 1990s. The Vatican did not defrock Spina.

The archbishop of Toulouse, Guy de Kerimel, sparked headlines after he promoted Spina as archdiocesan chancellor on June 2. Kerimel defended Spina’s elevation to the top position in the diocesan bureaucracy, claiming that he had “chosen the path of mercy.”

Spina forced a high school student from an abusive home, who wanted to become a priest and who relied on him as a spiritual guide, into oral sex and other acts.

Spina’s promotion comes in the wake of the high-profile case of the late Fr. Henri Antoine Grouès, a celebrity priest known as an advocate of the poor and founder of Emmaus International. He sexually assaulted multiple women between the late 1970s and 2005.

An independent report published July 9 revealed 12 new accusations of assault were levied against Grouès, bringing the number of accusers up to 45. Seven of the latest accusations were allegedly committed against minors. Grouès, popularly known as Abbé Pierre, died in 2007.

On July 2, a French parliamentary inquiry published its report about rape, sexual abuse, and violence at Notre-Dame de Bétharram, a private Catholic school in southwestern France. It is thought to be the biggest school child abuse scandal in French history.

The 330-page report is a result of 200 complaints filed since February 2024, accusing priests and staff of abuse from 1957 to 2004. A victim named Boris, who was sexually assaulted on his fourteenth birthday by principal Fr. Pierre Silviet-Carricart, labeled the school “a supermarket for sexual predators.”

Meanwhile, the Vatican has given a job and housing at the residence for papal ambassadors to another predator priest, who was previously sentenced to five years in prison for possession and exchange of child pornography.

“If [Leo] truly wants to break this network — and not just with generic declarations — he will have to start by explaining why a convicted priest like Capella remains under the Vatican roof.”

Even in Leo’s adopted country of Peru, the archbishop of Lima is boasting that he enjoys the pope’s confidence and expects to remain in office for five more years despite accusations of bungling the case of Fr. Nilton Zárate Rengifo. Zárate is accused of sexually harassing a nun, solicitating sexual favors in the confessional, asking her for intimate pictures, and seeking mutual masturbation during a phone call. He has not been subject to a formal canonical disciplinary procedure.

^Ok, it's good that you keep pointing out all of the sexual abuses of various clergy, but where are all the articles about drag queens grooming and abusing little kids? What's that? There are none?

Oops. My badski.

Indeed, it reminds me of a quote by Megyn Kelly which she keeps repeating: "I don't care about Trump getting handsy with somebody 20 years ago. I want someone who will close the border and someone who will keep boys out of my daughter's sports, which he has."

No wonder she's a Catholic.

And talking about Catholics and Trump:

Quote:Trump and the Catholic Church Fight a Law Requiring Clergy to Report Child Abuse

The Archdiocese of Seattle, along with the dioceses of Yakima and Spokane, filed a federal lawsuit — Etienne v. Ferguson — claiming the new law was a punch thrown straight at the Catholic Church; that it forces priests to choose between obeying the state or violating a core religious duty.

Then, on June 23, the U.S. Department of Justice formally threw its weight behind the Catholic Church, filing a formal motion to intervene in the case — a request that was granted on Tuesday.

And on Friday, Judge David G.  Estudillo issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the new law “as to the Sacrament of Confession” for the Seattle, Yakima, and Spokane dioceses, days before its July 27 effective date.

At its core, this battle turns on a crucial question the courts — and now the country — are forced to confront: Where does religious freedom end and the duty to protect children begin?

Under Washington’s new child protection law, clergy of all denominations are on the hook, just like physicians, nurses, social workers, teachers, law enforcement officers, childcare providers, and others.

The law does not force priests to testify in court, turn over notes, or violate attorney-client privilege. What it does is narrow but consequential: If clergy learn about child abuse — even during confession — they have to notify authorities within 48 hours.

“You know, Jesus talks about protecting children at Matthew 18:6,” says Hiram Sasser, executive general counsel at First Liberty Institute, the legal group representing the Archdiocese of Seattle.

But not so for the Trump DOJ, who are advancing a far more sweeping argument that goes for the law’s jugular.

By filing a formal complaint, the Department of Justice is effectively teaming up with Washington’s Catholic bishops to overturn the state’s mandatory reporting law, in one of the most aggressive federal moves to back organized religion in recent memory.

After The Boston Globe’s 2002 “Spotlight” investigation, and other explosive reporting exposed widespread sexual abuse and cover-ups, the Catholic Church was forced to confront a crisis of its own making. In response, it rolled out a slate of reforms it argues are proof of serious change.

But investigations show these self-imposed safeguards have repeatedly failed to prevent continued cover-up — not just in Washington, but nationwide.

The grand jury documented church leaders persuading victims not to report, pressuring law enforcement to drop investigations, and systematically reassigning accused priests to new parishes without warning communities. Among the most egregious cases were a priest raping a girl in the hospital after a tonsillectomy, another impregnating a minor and arranging her abortion, and coordinated diocesan instructions to call rape “inappropriate contact” and conceal removals as “sick leave.” The investigation revealed diocesan “secret archives” tracking abuse allegations, internal church lawyers shielding records, and tactics explicitly designed to “avoid scandal,” while senior church officials who enabled cover-ups retained their posts or advanced in rank.

A 2019 Associated Press investigation found more than 900 clergy across the U.S. credibly accused of child sexual abuse who were missing from diocesan and religious order disclosure lists, exposing major gaps in the Church’s promised transparency nationwide.
