Craig has long maintained the position that Jesus died for ALL humans and human lineages. He is nothing if not consistent. Stupidly wrong, but consistent.

She did not suggest I was depressed, but she made the link I had failed to see – that low mood and low hormone levels affect everything. Every strong tower can seem shaky when the chemical messages that keep your body and mind functioning stop getting through.

Jo Ibbott, author and menopause coach, supports women like Lisa [skipped that part] to understand their menopause experience. She is currently writing a series of biblical reflections to help women explore their faith through this life stage. “It’s been really interesting,” Jo says, “thinking about women feeling invisible, women feeling that loss of identity, and asking what the Bible contains that reassures us and speaks into this, because I don’t believe it’s God’s best that we get to perimenopause and then fall off a cliff.”

Jo also runs retreat days for women. So many people and organisations – especially the Church – depend on midlife women to keep going and keep giving out, says Jo. “This is something churches need to be aware of, from a pastoral point of view,” she says. “It’s mainly women who are volunteering within the Church, and it’s mainly women in midlife or a little bit older. If they’re struggling with mental health, confidence or feeling invisible, all those sorts of horrible, insidious feelings start to creep in, and the Church could be losing valuable people.” Some churches and denominations are starting to tackle this, she says, but on the whole, it does not yet recognise women who are struggling with the menopause, and support and value them sufficiently.

Rev Karen Markiewicz looked at the spiritual impact of menopause on women’s faith journeys as part of her master’s degree. Now, she’s writing a book that shares twelve women’s stories. Like Lisa, Karen also had to seek perimenopausal treatment during the pandemic.

Throughout this season, Karen remembers repeatedly asking God: “Where are you?” It felt, she says: “like a spiritual fog”.

“It was as though my prayer life, the way that I engaged my faith, just wasn’t resonating anymore,” she says. The Church, she says, doesn’t really talk about this aspect of midlife for women. “But I think we should. If there are women that want that space, it should be provided.”

The physicists among them argued that the universe could be explained “from nothing”. Thus, Dawkins concluded: “God almost certainly does not exist.”

But now, two decades on, the influence of the New Atheists has waned. Former adherents, most notably Ayaan Hirsi Ali, have repudiated atheism entirely and embraced the Christian faith. Others, such as Alex O’Connor, the hugely popular atheist YouTuber and Steven Bartlett, the businessman turned podcaster, have moderated their outlooks too. Ironically, even Dawkins admitted in 2024 he feels “at home” in the Christian “ethos” – though he still firmly rejects the existence of God.

As many atheist philosophers (such as the eminent John Gray) have noted, the New Atheists’ philosophical arguments were never very good. Moreover, their arguments seemed strangely anachronistic following many of the great scientific discoveries of the 20th century.

Well, two atheists who have either become more moderate or become Christian don’t prove that the influence of New Atheists has waned. In fact, it you lump together atheists, agnostics, and “nones,” you see a rise from about 13% to 35%—nearly a threefold increase—between 2000 and 2020. And the “philosophical arguments” for atheism amount largely to the philosophical arguments for the Loch Ness Monster: hypothesis of huge, powerful being erected, evidence for said being not adduced, hypothesis rejected.

Argument from personal incredulity. He doesn't know that the Big Bang is not when the universe was "created." What has been known to be not true for some 40+ years, is the notion that the Big Bang is the beginning of space, time, energy, the laws of physics, and everything that we know and experience. The Big Bang wasn’t the beginning but was rather preceded by a completely different state known as cosmic inflation.

And of course even if you think a divine being created the Universe, that doesn’t mean it was the Christian or Abrahamic God. It could have been Brahma or Zeus, or a giant, omnipotent squid.

Then the fine-tuning argument

We just have to go with what we can infer from what we can observe. What observational data do we have? All we have is just one instance of a universe (ours) and just one instance of a planet with life, earth.

Leo had specifically criticized a medical-aid-in-dying law that took effect in Sept. 12 in his home state of Illinois — the 13th U.S. state with such a law.
