My sister heads a charity which supports people in the LGBT community. She often has to help people who're suffering psychological damage following attempted 'cures'; some of the things these 'healers' do are sickening.

Makes sense. Cool for you and your sister! I've heard a lot of horror stories in that territory, too. Makes me wonder how many more GLBT people there would be out there except that so many of us commit suicide when these 'cures' fail.

I remember when I first started hearing about transexuals in any actual detail I thought it was an aberration [I will never claim myself to have always been a rational man; that's only in relatively recent time] of psychology, something that was basically on par with a mental or emotional illness. Let's be entirely honest, however; there isn't much psychological information actually known and how I came to this conclusion largely is from misinformation spread via bigotry and ignorance and assumptions. I'd read something that said that people who underwent sex reassignment surgery came out of it feeling worse, lost, and confused; basically a "Well I'm here; now what??" kind of thing. And then come to find out later it's the opposite; the ones who undergo "counseling" against it end up feeling worse, not better, and the ones who go under the knife feel better.

In my defense, though, while I advocate change and progression I have to admit that I myself often take a bit of time to accept it, myself. Might be because I've always had to change and I've always had to change against my will so while I see the benefits I still have a bit of a dislike towards it. Holds true with physical situations AND mental and emotional ones, too.

Now I'm beginning to learn what a lot of trannies go through. I am not so arrogant as to say that I understand what they're going through, I can only learn about it but I'll never be able to related, nor would I be arrogant enough to do so, but...it sounds pretty harsh. There seems to be a ridiculous amount of misinformation and outright lies tailored towards making transexuals look bad in the sense of morality and it's really fucking disgusting.

Me, I'm not really into trannies. Just not my thing. But it is some peoples' thing and, really, it isn't hurting me, so why should I care if someone wants to change their body?

Would that everybody else could adopt that mindset, hm? We can dream, though, we can dream...

Well one idea would be to clone a female version of yourself and then transplant your brain into the new 'you'...... just a few minor issues of connecting a nerve ending here and there.

Something along those lines, although we haven't really gotten cloning of humans down pat yet. Even if we did, we'd have to do something about the fact that the clone would, unfortunately, be born male unless something were done to change the genetic code or something.

It's a fantasy I would love like nothing else but, sadly, won't be happening any time soon. Even if said treatment was approved in, let's say 10 years, by that time I'd be a little too old to be in the perfect age range for them.

I figure that the issue with absolute regendering will be solved around the same time as cancer due to the fact both would require a much deeper understanding of genetic modification...but I wouldn't give up hope so soon. I mean, shit, tomatoes are extremely complex genetically...I think even more so than humans...and they're one of the most highly modified fruits on the market.

I wouldn't go for cloning... the concept frightens me.

What if they cloned an exact copy of your body except that they built this one with no brain (to remove many of the ethical concerns) and this one had a fully functional female reproductive system. Would you allow a transplant in this case?

I have to admit, it would be interesting. It would be really interesting to see if your immune system would accept it or attack it as a foreign body.

It would be rather interesting if we could clone ourselves and transplant our brains. That would actually be one of the possible means of immortality...or at least a greatly prolonged life. Can you imagine? Infinitely repeating youth? And hey, when you get bored of it you can just let yourself die!

Scientists! Get on this! I've only got about 60 years left, after all!
