No, you are forgetting the reoccuring values. 0.999 x 9 does indeed equal 8.991, but 0.999... (reoccuring) is the same value as 1, as my calculation showed.
You can do it the other way: 1/3 = 0.333... (reoccuring) 3 * 1/3 = 3 * 0.333... 1 = 0.999...
It is still 10X - 1X=9X, not 10x value rounded off - 1x value rounded off.
Just like your division, first you simplify to the total amount of X needed, then do your multiplication/division.

I don't think you are quite getting the calculation.
We set x to 0.999... (reoccuring). 10x is therefore 9.999... (simple multiplication). To get 9x, we need to subtract x from 10x (10x - x), which is the same as doing the calculation 9.999... - 0.999... So 9x = 9 So x = 1.
