There is every right to compare dire predictions to the absence of dire events and ask what is the point in making predictions if they do not happen. But both sides have the right to say we have to wait for long term trends in those predictions. A unusual number of tornadoes in 2011 compared to the low of 2012 gives neither side a claim.

Seriously, when does the sea level start to rise noticeably?

One has to wonder at people who constantly make dire predictions without offering solutions. Sounds like telling children about about the bogeyman. At least the preachers have the common courtesy to tell us how to avoid their hell. But when it comes to CO2 their only advice is, Stop that!

Is there any wonder there is melter fatigue?

Posted on this plenty of times here, but it bears repeating. Charts and graphs don't sell ad minutes or full page color spreads. Charts and graphs don't snare the grants and funding that researchers rely on. Climate apocalypse does. Hey, remember that movie about those researchers who spent 10 years in the antarctic ice taking readings and eating canned goods. No? Oh, that's right, because that movie was never made. Instead we're treated to Day After Tomorrow.

World carbon levels in 'dangerous' new territory

The planet has passed a significant - and unwelcome - milestone, with the concentration of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere exceeding 400 parts per million (ppm) for the first time in human history.
While the 400ppm mark was reached at some measuring sites last year, on Thursday the daily average topped the mark at the official site at Hawaii's Mauna Loa station.
''Humanity has never been here before,'' John Connor, chief executive of the Climate Institute, said in a statement. ''We are in dangerous and uncharted territory, with little time to ensure a safe and sustainable future.''
A report on the website of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the concentration of carbon dioxide had increased each year since the Mauna Loa site began tracking the greenhouse gas in 1958. In the late 1950s, the yearly increase of the gas was 0.7 ppm. It has since tripled, to 2.1 ppm a year during the past decade, the NOAA said. ''The evidence is conclusive that the strong growth of global CO2 emissions from the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas is driving the acceleration,'' said NOAA senior scientist Pieter Tans, according to the website.

Have to agree with Nony that it is very difficult for your average punter to get their head around the publicly available information let alone the science. Hope the above may be of some help.

One has to ask after the assumed special significance of a number simply because it has two zeroes. Why it is not 380 or 431? It is the kind of thing physics undergrads learn to avoid in their first year of lab. I find it incredible that people claiming to be physicists give magical significance to two zeroes.

I will leave the wisdom of measuring CO2 on a volcano for another discussion.

As for panicking, the global result may be a better world as the best of all global climates was unlikely to have been in 1850.

Dire predictions that are deliberately misleading are not only unprofessional they border or fraud and may actually constitute fraud. It is in the same category as astrology and fortune telling.

Melter fatigue is real and their own damned fault.

Close but no cigar. The atomospheric average temperature hasn't been rising as much as we originally thought it would over the past roughly ten years.

Why?

Because our oceans are currently absorbing the increasing temperatures. This is understood now. But the atmospheric average temp is going to start rising again very soon. Then it's going to be the oceans turn again. It's going to seasaw back and forth. Fucking up everything.

Get ready to start figuring out how to replace your fish and lobster dinners with jelly fish. Probably it's going to take a lot of ketchup to make that palatable.

The biggest issue is that all the computer models have failed, so it is back to the drawing board.

No they haven't "failed" so much as just being the fact that they're limited and the "predictions" made by them have been far too extreme. But I've said it many times - computer models no matter how sophisticated is not evidence.

I'm Canadian. When the tundra warms up and unlocks all that rich dinosaur-laden soil for agriculture, we're going to have a population boom and start building up our military. But don't worry-- we won't attack the States, because the tumbleweed market won't ever pay off the way the Republicans are banking it will.

Saying models "fail" is like saying a hammer failed. A hammer is just a tool-- the user needs enough info about his environment to be able to hit the nail on the head.

Also, using this as an excuse to keep digging giant holes in the earth, to belch toxic gases into the atmosphere, and to hoard most of the Earth's wealth among a few people in a few countries, is a shitty, evil thing to do. An oil exec's 5th yacht is worth much less than my young daughter's pink, healthy lungs.

Agree. No excuse to ignore BUT every excuse to WATCH FOR MORE DATA.
