Football or Football or Futbol or Soccer or..
I can't believe I haven't thought of this yet, but here goes. Since there's so many of you from the opposite side of "the pond" from me. I was curious. What do you English think of American Football (not soccer or Footie)? How many players do you know, and vice versa. I am a huge sports fan, and know very few players in The Premier League, but for an American, the fact that I even know what The Premier League is, is quite a rare piece of knowledge, at least, in my experience. I thought it would be fun to post some guys that are commonly known around here in the states, and see which Europeans could identify them. Likewise, feel free to post pics of notorious Soccer players (footie), and prepare to be astounded at the ones I don't know at all! Might be fun to see what comes of this. Americans can post Baseball or NFL Football players. Europeans can post English Football or Rugby players. Deal? Anyway, here's a player from my favorite team that's pretty commonly known around here. Who is he, and what team is this? Europeans only please! No Google!

I can't say I know all that much about American Football, other than the old joke (such as it is) that the players seem to need two tons of body armour just to play Rugby.

Incidentally, the origin of the term Soccer is interesting. It arose from our public schools, probably Eton or Cambridge, and from the peculiarly upper crust banter they seem to have - half term hols and all that. Soccer derives from Association Football, as opposed to Rugger which comes from Rugby Football.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Something tells me you're an American. While I respect your opinion, I'm even more grateful that you managed to insult him while still abiding by the rules! lol...Go on....Put up one of your preferred players.

I used to really admire Rugby players for not wearing the pads, and to a great degree, I still do. However, after spending some time over seas and watching Rugby and Austrailian Football, I realized some key differences in the game play that really make pads a requirement for our sport. The positions in NFL Football are a lot more specialized, and the line of scrimmage is reset to a stop at every play. All too often players are moving at way higher speeds, and carrying much more momentum. Check out the YouTube highlights for some of the hits that are delivered in the NFL, and then imagine the funerals that would take place if they weren't wearing pads. Don't get me wrong, Rugby players are definitely tough, but i've seen them slow down when approaching a defender, and for good reason! They're not wearing pads!

Ha ha ha...What makes this funny is that your prefferred player went to hightschool two cities from me! He's a Texan. No beef here. Google: Highland Park Scotts. He's got a cannon for an arm. He was my fantasy QB last year. Awesome second choice! Best RB of all time in my opinion. Used to love watching him play.

I knew he went to Georgia University, but I didn't know he went to high school in Texas. Texas high school football is cutthroat.

Yes, and it was an absolute shame the way the franchise and fans treated him at the end of his career. The guy just wanted to be traded to a team that had a chance to go somewhere, but the owners refused. He retired instead, and the fans got pissy for it. I remember going to games and seeing people wearing his jersey with his name crossed out. I even went to a Piston's game that he was at, and when they showed him on the giant monitor the crowd booed. It's a shame, because the guy was amazing and just wanted to play on a team that could get him a ring.

Do you have to be English in order to post here, or does 'on the other side of the pond' suffice? Big Grin

Football: A game where you use your feet to move a ball.
Handoval: A game where you use your hands to move an oval shaped pigskin.

I know nothing of American football, but I think that the Super Bowl is played around Thanksgiving(?)
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

Lol...Anybody can post here, and yes, from the sound of it, you definitely qualify as someone who can take guesses at our famous handoval players...lol. It just wouldn't be fun if we took turns naming players that were obvious to us Americans.
