I've never read Dostoevsky, but I've heard good things. But if DOS's posts have done anything for me, they have put me off reading him.
It would seem that even respected Russian authors can be guilty of the most basic fallacies.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Well, it could be the author's characters use fallacies, rather than the author himself.
Being unfamiliar with Mr. D's works, I can't say.

Unfortunately the Christian will have to do something other than quote Dostoesvky if he wants to be listened to.

They never consider the third option.
Them, "There is a God"
Us, "No there is not, not yours or any"
Them, "So you think you are God"
US, "NO YOU DIP SHIT, God/god does not exist so how can a human be a god themeselves"?
Saying humans make up gods is not saying humans are gods.
Atheists wont kill themselves to prove a point on that issue because we know it would be fucking stupid.
However the believer has the claim that God is all powerful and can do anything, so by that standard the believer should be able to blow off their own head with a shotgun and have God grow it back. However, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT.
Suicides happen for natural reasons, such as depression or physical pain from illness, but the fucking most stupid reason humans kill others or themselves is over a fictional non existent sky hero.

The 9/11 hijackers certainly put their money where their beliefs were. I would have preferred they do what moderates do, water it down to ignore it. If they had watered it down 3,000 people would still be alive today.

Shouldn't it be the christian who should kill himself to prove his faith in the existence of a soul, and the desirability of heaven, and the nothion his soul will go there?
We atheists are suppose to want to live because we don't believe there is anything that await us after we die
