Any Vegetarians/Vegans here?

RE: Any Vegetarians/Vegans here?
Quote:The other problem is that it's hard to know whether vegetarian foods actually lead to a net reduction in animal suffering or death. (This came up in a similar thread a few months ago). Massive ploughing and harvesting machines are likely to cause very many injuries or death to field mice and voles, to birds, etc. So to really walk the walk, I'd say a self-sufficient commune is really only the way to go, since it's really the only way you can have control over how your food is grown and processed.

That would be a good argument if the meat industry weren't massive users of such crops themselves. It takes 7 units of vegetable protein to make one unit of beef protein so if grains are used (as they generally are in teh industrial agrobusiness of meat,) then you are killing 7 times as many voles, fieldmice etc)

If we became vegetarian worldwide out crop use would substantially decrease.

This is nonsense. You do not need to be am omnivore. There is nothing in meat that you need and I don't.

RE: Any Vegetarians/Vegans here?
I've been a Vegetarian since December 1991, just after my 5th Birthday. I'd recently found out that meat was dead animals, which I thought was gross because animals are gross and smelly, so eating meat had been making me sick for a little while. Then I found out from a friend at school that I didn't have to eat meat, so I went home and told my mum I wasn't going to eat animals anymore. 22 years later I've never eaten meat.

Every now and then I have a go at veganism, but I've never lasted longer than 3 months because I've yet to find a decent substitute for Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate. Sainsbury's do a decent soya milk chocolate, but that doesn't satisfy my chocolate cravings for long. Cheese used to be an issue with my attempts at staying vegan, but then I discovered nutritional yeast flakes and they do a good job as a cheese substitute in many situations and I rarely even buy cheese anymore. Eggs just disgust me. I'll still eat products containing eggs, like cakes (though when I make my own cakes they're egg-free) but I hate anything that tastes like egg and the sight of raw eggs grosses me out so much I won't have eggs in the house.

I also hate mushrooms as much as I hate meat. That makes being a veggie kinda awkward!

I eat meat, vegans & vegetarians are free to be so, no complaints from me. What I complaint however, is the idea that alot of them have that others must bend to their beliefs, the unfounded and downright bigot accusations that people that eat meat are "immoral" or "unethical". This is where it becomes a cult like philosophy. Human beings are omnivores, who are they to say what I should or shouldn't eat? Because animals suffer? Hogwash! I've worked on a slaughterhouse and there are standards for the animal's handling, in fact the animals are kept unstressed and are killed in a very humane way, without suffering, not only because of ethics, but also because a stressed animal before being put down decreases the meat quality.

Want to be vegan/vegetarian? Good for you, I have no right to criticize what you should put on your plate, the same way you have no right to criticize what I put on mine.
