Seriously, how is anyone dumb enough to be fat?
March 18, 2014 at 10:12 am
Yeah I thought I'd post this in the quintessential format that atheists choose on the Religion forum. It really does my head in.
What I've learned so far disturbs me greatly. People are so, so dumb.
I know people who worry about their weight, but don't do anything to change their destructive/unhealthy lifestyles! It's like they never bothered learning nutrition and they don't want to learn it now.
This is what I've learned: people are extremely ignorant. In fact they're so unaware that they try "fad diets" with no concept as to why it would or wouldn't work. They say that they want to lose weight - but don't even bother to make the easy small changes to their eating habits that would guarantee it!!
Like true, I don't really understand how my car engine works and that's why I let a mechanic take care of it - but we're talking about our bodies, how do people not take proper care of their own bodies???
So seriously, how is it that people are so, so dumb??

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK
"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

You have a very naive view of the emotional component of self control, and addiction. Or, better, seem to be completely oblivious of it. Are you somehow not neurotypical that this problem seems to absurd to you? That's not meant as an insult btw.

Because in reality people aren't as free in the choices they make as uninformed (usually religious) models make them out to be.

I think it's more lazy than dumb. We are wired to seek out the path that seems the most efficient (that is to say, the least amount of work for the greatest amount of reward). Which is why fad diets and diet pills are so popular. Unfortunately I think that leads people to a false understanding about our diet and how it affects our weight. The dieting industry has led people to believe that "diet" refers to a short-term change in eating habits. But our diet is what we eat. Making long-term changes is the key.
That, and exercising regularly, which is also more about laziness than stupidity.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I nearly laughed.

Is a heroin addict too lazy to quit? I guess for a strange definition of lazy...

I think people who struggle with weight issues do so for a number of reasons, I don't think they're ignorant.
Food addiction is just as real as any other addiction, I've noticed in looking at people who struggle with maintaining a healthy weight.
Not as much compassion goes to people with food addictions as say with drug/alcohol addictions. Just an observation, I've made.

There are other reasons than lazy or stupid. A side effect of the medication I take is increased apetite - this in the past has caused me to put on weight. Luckily I am a moderately active guy and exercise daily so this has created an agreeable balance.

Oh. oh. I see. not. Or do I? Well then that worked out very nicely. I take everything back and applaud Aractus for his insight.
