I'm still a bit baffled when people say he started out "decent enough". What exactly did he do to earn that praise?

Didn't he speak out against the rich, and start talking about cleaning out the pedophiles? Although if he shuffled them out before they could be indicted, that doesn't speak well of him.

What's even more telling is that they would rather a child live in an orphanage than with two loving parents of the same sex. There's no defense of that beyond "Eww, gross," but they know that approach would be even less well received.

He extended an olive branch to non-believers, and he's done a couple of other image-fixing things I can't remember specifically. I for one, however, have always seen it as just that, image-fixing, not truly genuine statements.
But you can always count on them to show their true colors when it comes to the gays.

Some ballsy moves, I must admit...

About that atheist thing...
http://www.catholicvote.org/what-pope-fr...-atheists/
According to catholics (using the Pope's entire statement and not the convenient soundbytes), the Pope didn't mean that atheists go to heaven. Additionally, it appears that the other vague "praise" of atheists was just more flowery PR language with no substance.

And as for the pedophiles, I'll start giving a modicum of moral recognition the moment he starts turning over known pederasts that currently serve under him to the police.
The dude hires a former Fox-news PR agent to spin his empty statements into profound "revolutionary" or "rocking the Catholic world" declarations, when he hasn't changed one iota of Catholic doctrine, hasn't changed a single catholic position, and is still harboring and facilitating sexual predators.
I agree with the -1 rating of a good person, on a scale from 0 to 5. His -1 is just filligreed in slavering press and convenient quote mines.

The soundbytes are enough for those almost out...
And about those arrests, all it took me was a google search of "pedofile priests arrested" to find a bunch of news on the subject from 2013 and 2014... I guess this pope is not protecting these guys like his predecessor was, huh?

And there are plenty more articles on the pedophile and pedophile-protecting priests that are still working for him in the Vatican and elsewhere.
And, Pope Benedict (or Been-a-dick, or Emperor Palpatine) did actually boot 400 priests himself for connections to pedophilia, so it's not like his predecessors had no statistics to show for it. The priest arrests have been going on far longer than just under Franky, and these arrests generally come from independent investigations or chruch members bringing the accusations into the public eye, not from the Vatican willingly coming forward with evidence.
I'm not going to lower the standard of what I believe a moral person is for the sake of the Pope, and Franky certainly hasn't crossed the zero line for me.

I think each Pope starts off well, because they haven't had time to fuck anything up yet. Then it goes downhill from there. I mean, serial murderers start off well. They didn't kill anyone at all for years.
