The best of piety is to think the best of people.
- Imam Ali Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 3027; Mizan ul Hikmah, page No. 213 The evil person cannot think well of anybody because he can only see people as he himself is predisposed. -Imam Ali Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 1903; Mizan ul Hikmah, page No. 214 The one who does not think well of people feels alienated from everybody. - Imam Ali Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 9084; Mizan ul Hikmah, page No. 214 (January 1, 2016 at 5:58 pm)MysticKnight Wrote: The best of piety is to think the best of people. "Peity" is a nonsense word. It is condescension masked as empathy. Assuming someone is evil merely because they correct your error is evil. Why should I think well of say someone like Hitler? I wouldn't care if I was alienated from his followers, he was an asshole. Platitudes and cliches do not define life. We have never been a separate species. We are arguing your bad use of logic here, not your right to make any claim you want. YOU need to look in the mirror and evaluate your own claims instead of merely being a salesperson. You are misunderstanding the hadiths. General meaning applies to general situations.
In a situation where the society you know is generally unjust (like Hitler and Germany), the following applies: At a time when injustice is more prevalent than good, it is not permitted for anyone to entertain good opinions about another unless he knows them (ie. the person) to be such. Imām Mūsā ibn Ja‘far al-Kāżim (a.s.) al-Kafi, v. 5, p. 298, no. 2; Mizan ul Hikmah, page No. 215
And how do you determine whether or not that is the case? Seems like more religious platitudes to pick and choose at whim.
MK, I appreciate using the folklore you like to make your point. Here's some folklore from my own tribe that may illustrate why I distrust Delicate's sincerity:
-A man may live after losing his life but not after losing his honour. -You've got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your father was. -Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go. -Pity him who makes an opinion a certainty. -Forgetting your manners doesn't excuse them. -You can have a free tongue or your can have friends. Never both. Feel free to use the hadith to sort the meaning out of this. Boru

But there is no good reason to come to a forum full of people of a certain viewpoint (Atheism) and then assume everyone has these negative qualities like Delicate is doing. And in society, generally, you ought to assume good about people. I meet a person, I assume they are good. I get to know people, and most people I end up knowing are decent people. And just because you have to make a decision if a society over all is engrossed in injustice, doesn't mean it's at whim. The reason why I'm not rude to people here is because I assume they are decent people. If I were to assume everyone deserves to be treated with contempt, it would be impossible to be well mannered to them. Generally, you assume well of people. This doesn't mean you assume them to be saints or anything, but assume generally, they are decent human beings. In a society that is engrossed in injustice however you have to act differently. You don't assume anything, you make sure you know the individual is good. |
