Yeah, I do the same, but I keep it so short it hardly makes a difference. I'm wondering if the oils would soften it up.
I can't remember where this verse is from, I think it got removed from canon:

When I have to wet shave, I don't even bother using shaving foam.

I've heard that people commonly use too much shaving cream. I guess the idea is to apply a thin enough layer to lube the skin and raise the hairs. Too much and you don't get the same effect. Maybe you using soap is getting that thin yet lathered layer effect? At any rate, you're saving some coin.
