Don't feel too bad.  When I was just out of high school and in my first apartment I had to ask my younger brother to come help me assemble my waterbed.  I think it required a hammer and screwdriver.  Kind of lame.  But I've found I'm pretty good at making most anything out of wood.  Just finished a wooden moon gate in the garden, something I've always wanted to do.  In college I helped my contractor brother on jobs and just by being around it was able to get comfortable.  I'm sure you'd be fine in such a situation too.  (Not that I ever want that job again, thank you.)
