An acquaintance more than a stranger. An American more than a Syrian.

To you as an individual, what is the difference between an American you've never personally met, and a Syrian you've never personally met? I seriously doubt you know every single American down to the 300 millionth to call them all "acquaintances" who you personally care about.

What constitutes a "stranger"?

I'm British-born and I live in a large British city, probably more than half of my acquaintances are either immigrants or descendents of immigrants (I'm from an immigrant family myself), although I know plenty of ethnically British people too. The people I know personally, their lives are not objectively more important in the big picture where my personal feelings are irrelevant, but they do mean more to me personally. That's not a shared nationality thing, I connect with people on far deeper shit than that.

You question was, at least how I understood it, about why would you value the two lives equally.  Not a question about how behavior actually manifests itself.

My point is that if we operate from incorrect premises we're less likely to reach optimal conclusions. I'm not separating the should from reality.

Americans are the riskiest demographic -to other americans-...in america. The "risk" of refugees is statistically irrelevant, and very nearly non-existent.

No, I only assess people claiming to be good christians while being choosy assholes when it comes to help your neighbours. So, yes, I'm assessing you based on your religion, since Jesus didn't say, to make a list of more or less valuáble lives.

When did it happen? when was it suddenly ok to be a selfish arsehole in the US, to be able to watch the suffering of the world and say "I'm ok you can just suffer". There seems to be a growing demographic over here as well, typified by the UKIP voters. But in America being a selfish arsehole seems to be a brand of pride.

We are in the bad version of the star trek universe and that started with Trump.

IDK man, it really does hurt to see it.  It's not my america.  We're supposed to be big-hearted and welcoming.  Tons of other shit too, not all of it remotely pleasant.....but big-hearted and welcoming.  Hell, that used to be a fairly common global view of americans.  Maybe people go tired of trying to be better versions of themselves, of doing their level best to live up to the american ideal, lol?  They're just letting it all hang out...it's trumps america now, after all.

He was a pretty well known anti-semite.  The Ferengi are a transparent laundry list of medeival stereotypes about jews.  This was brought up by writers, as a potential pr problem...and dismissed by the studio. Nimoy and Shatner (both jews) had no illusions regarding the man, themselves. Not at all remarkable or surprising, if you think about it. Very much a product of his time and culture.
