The Dave Phenomenon

The Dave Phenomenon
As I said in my intro post I am one of the millions of Daves. Though the Kevins, Marvins and Normans of ths world have had their share Dave seems to remain the default butt name. Not in the joke class but one aspect nof the phenomenn was during a course in the RAF, 21 in the class, all of a similar age within 3 years, 11 Daves. We all acquired nick-names (and I spent my entire RAF career with mine, there is usually some-one who knew you before at any posting. And, no, I will not reveal it here!)

At the time when having your name, and that of your gf, stuck high on the car windscreen was in fashion I saw three ''Dave Sharon'' s in a small area. Whether Dave was a multiple or serial car owner or there were three such pairings I still do not know. But I do remember this pairing in a cartoon as well.

Speaking of cartoons:

A Freeview TV channel was renamed ''Dave'', full of golden oldies and petrolhead stuff, just not my thing.

Then there is always

In technology there is also the ''Dave-to-Girl'' ratio, a measure of the lack of females in the computer world.

Historically Dave has not had much exposure, as ''David'' there was that littlle guy (I can relate to that, being short in the arse category myself) who slew the big punk of course, but we don't talk about that do we? There was also a royal David here in the UK,, better remembered for changing his name to Edward on being crowned, then giving the job up so he could marry a rich American divorcee - sensible fella, but not the done thing in polite circles!

The good old BBC recently got into the act with an interactive comedy drama thing, based on sci-fi, where a critical entity is a computer called, er, ''Dave'' I think...

Reports of any other observations of this phenomon will be appreciated.

Later: Oops, forgot Dave Brubeck, but you have to be over a certain age or have certain musical tastes to remember his mellow tones.

{I'm still finding my way round as to including images and videos,}

Just be damn glad it's not Johann.

Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

You have about a decade on me, give or take. I do recall that there were a lot of Davids, and a lot of Stevens, in my grade school days (the 50s). They sound alike when yelled on the playground. Lots of heads turning when one or the other was called. I don't recall the butt of the joke being named Dave very often; that's maybe a British thing? Good to see you posting over here, btw!
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

Hi, Fireball, that video serms to indicate it is not unknown that side of the Pond.

Thinking back on age I suppose, at three score years and ten, plus three, I am technically in my 8th decade!

Never mind, eh! One is as old as one thinks.

Americans still speak quite a lot of olde English as a legacy of the Pilgrim Fathers.
