Scales question. What is the answer?

I remember this one from my childhood:

A shepherd has 3 possessions, a lion (don't ask why), a lamb and a stack of hay

He wants to cross the river with all his possessions, but the boat only has capacity for one item plus the driver (he has to drive).

If he is not present to control the situation, the lion will eat the lamb and the lamb will eat the grass

How does he get these three across the river?

1. Cross with the lamb (the lion doesn't eat the grass)

4. Go back and bring the lamb again.

There's an alternate way to solve the original problem.

You can weigh them 3vs3. If the heavier ball is in one of those two groups in will tip the scale to that side, then you work from that group of 3. If it's not, you know it's one of the remaining 2 balls. So you can actually get it in two if it happens to be in the set of two, but no more than 3 if it isn't.
