I am majoring in anthropology and minoring in business. Can you name one book with as much history in it as the Bible?

Any book that contains actual history and not full of myths.

A surprisingly large number of Christians actually think that. Or to be more precise, other versions of the Bible are inferior either because modern translations are corrupted by more recently discovered manuscripts, or because the people who translated it did so with a specific ideology in mind. Or maybe because of the beautiful prose and poetry of that version, but since that's the reason that holds up the best, it's the one that those KJV-Onlyists tend to not emphasise.

This is a point worth discussing in regards to theism. I often think the thing that keeps theism going is adherence to tradition rather that the acceptance of claims about the universe. It could be any tradition (an arbitrary translation of a book that becomes popular, for example). When many (but not all) theists come here to discuss their "beliefs" what they really are discussing is the arbitrary traditions that have been impressed upon them.

I am aware of the King James Only movement and their theories about the supposed corruption of modern translations. But did YOU know that there are some who have taken this to the extreme, and there are those who consider the KJV more accurate than the original Hebrew and Greek?

"The KJV As New Revelation" – This group claims that the KJV is a "new revelation" or "advanced revelation" from God, and it should be the standard from which all other translations originate. Adherents to this belief may also believe that the original languages, Hebrew and Greek, can be corrected by the KJV. This view is often called "Ruckmanism" after Peter Ruckman, a staunch advocate of this view.

Yeah. I've even heard some who believe that ancient Hebrew/all the other languages that would have been spoken in the Bible were functionally identical to King James' English. Such a single-minded devotion to the Bible reeks of bibliolatry, like it's the book itself they worship more than the God whose words are supposedly illuminated therein.

Why do the jesus freaks get so deliriously misty eyed about it?

Let's face it, if I were pressed to select a particular version of the bible I would pick the so called "Wicked Bible" which states "Thou shalt commit adultery". Now there is a commandment I could go along with comfortably.

Ironically, the Wicked Bible IS the KJV. A fun bit of trivia with which to mock the god-botherers.

I think most of it has to do with its being the dominant Bible of the non-Catholic English-speaking world for about three centuries. And it's remained powerful, largely for the same reason the collected works of Shakespeare are, partly because it's in the public domain, and partly because it's shaped our language in immeasurable ways. Indeed, IIRC, Richard Dawkins included a long list of common English phrases that came directly from the KJV.

As a proper translation of the text (See the Amplified Bible for my preferred version), the KJV fails spectacularly (indeed, at one point, it mentions the Jews CELEBRATING EASTER),



But when even Christopher Fucking Hitchens devoted one of his last pieces to praising what an achievement in literature it is, it shouldn't be too hard to see why its following has thrived.
