THE Gun Thread
RE: THE Gun Thread
Famous boxer Jack Dempsey was able to beat up a pair of muggers who tried to beat him up when he was in his mid-seventies, but not a lot of seniors can do such a thing. And I don't think packing heat is necessarily likely to level the playing field, since I'm fairly certain that requires its own set of skills.

Also, I can't help but notice that Biker's calling Boru out for supposedly thinking old people are all doddering old fools (though Biker certainly seems to be one, if you can expand the definition of "doddering" to include his unhinged ramblings and his tenuous interpretation of other people's posts), even though he himself likely brought up the idea of a little old lady overpowering an armed man twice her size just so he could have a strawman to balk at when I pointed out how rare the "good guy with a gun" scenario actually is (and that even a good guy without a gun seems more likely to pull it off.)

Of course I don’t. But reflexes, reaction time, new skill acquisition, and memory all suffer with age - that’s not a slur, just a fact. The number of 90 year old grans able to defend themselves with a handgun against an armed assailant is pretty small.

Boru

And you know this how? How many people do you know in their 90' s who have a concealed carry pistol?

None would be my bet.

I on the other hand know several. My dad for one.

He can make a itty bitty 45 acp appear out of thin air and he will not miss a target at self defense range. He has been handling firearms over 8 decades. Never had a problem.

Our neighbor's mother is 2 years older than dad. She has a S+W .38 1st gen hand ejector ( not 38 special) she had been proficient with since WWII. She's pretty frail - and would be completely unable to defend herself without it. With it? You' d be a fool to try her. I make  reloads for her - and watched her go through a whole box punching holes in paper. Nobody has to show her how to use a revolver. She can fire, load and fire in the dark - and probably asleep......Faster than many I' ve seen.

And although the nursing home is considered the resident's home, the resident still does not have the right to possess a gun there. Good thing, too.

Tyranny. Absolute tyranny. That's a totally untapped market for the cultivation of the illusion of impending death.

I know right? How dare we prevent grandpa with dementia from possessing a gun. It goes against everything for which the NRA stands.

Oh, grandma's eyesight is not the best and she might not recognize you and might think you're an intruder. Better let that woman have a gun.

That's two people in their 90s who are proficient with small arms. This fits right in with my 'pretty small' comment.

Do a bit of extrapolation: You said you know 'several' people in their 90s who carry concealed pistols (and I don't doubt you). How does that compare with the number of people you know who are NOT in their 90s who do so?

Since you asked, I've never known anyone of any age (apart from two police detectives) who routinely carried concealed pistols. I've known a fair few gun owners, but concealed carry hasn't ever been a thing in places I've lived.
