What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
RE: What do you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
All metals smelted after 1945 unavoidably contain traces of radioactive nuclides that were created and spread around by atmospheric nuclear weapon tests carried in the 1940s and 1950s. Consequently they are faintly radioactive and unsuitable for use with many sensitive scientific experiments and measuring instruments.

So the raw steel from shipwrecks that occurred before 1945 has special value because they are uncontaminated and can be cut (without smelting) and used that way.

You can cook hard-boiled eggs in an air fryer.

When shredding chicken or pork for things like empanadas and tacos, you can cut the pieces into largish chunks, then use an electric hand mixer for shredding.

an egg cuber is a transparent hard plastic box with a plunger on top. Its stated design purpose was to enable an interested user to mesh a hard boiled egg into a cubical shape

the smallest known vertebrate animal is a frog that, as a adult, grows to a maximum length equal to the typical width of an adult human little fingernail.

one single specie, homo sapiens,  account for 90% of the total biomass of all mammals on earth,  and 95% of the biomass of all land mammals of any kind.

earth is rapidly approaching a monocultural ecosystem.   only a handful of times in earth’s history did a single animal species so dominate the global macro ecosystem.   in each of those occasions the dominant animal was a disaster species that happen to survive a major mass extinction event that killed the majority of animal species on land and sea.   so the survives specie rapidly fanned out to occupy as many  of the vacated ecological niches.  within a short time, the earth became largely a monoculture in which fossils of one species represents most, at times nearly all, animal fossils found around the world.  in each of these occasions the disaster specie itself then either collapsed or went extinct within a geological short period.

A couple years ago after an extended period of rain, little tiny frogs (could have been toads) were absolutely everywhere.  My husband went out to mow and they were so thick on the ground that he stopped.  He called me out to look at the plague.  They were literally the size of one my fingernails.  Cute as they could be but sure glad they didn't all make it to adulthood...we'd have been walking on their backs every time we left the house.  It's only happened once since we moved here in 2006...not sure what the deal was.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

The summit of the Chimborazo volcano in Ecuador is the point on the surface of the earth furthest from the center of the earth. It is over 7000 feet further from the center of the earth than the summit of Mt. Everest.
