which seems quite natural for the general bronze age and early to middle iron age religious landscape on euroasia,  prior to the widespread knowledge of the odd exclusionary sects like Judaism and later christianity, if you think about it.

religion was not seen as a separate thing with distinctive manifestations from other phenomenons observed in all parts of life,  furthermore different people’s religionious practices are not seen as mutually contradictory or exclusive,  they are all seen as grading into eachother, and grading into other phenomenon in life,  so there is no such separate and distinct thing as religion.

It actually seems pretty odd, given that impiety was a crime. There was no word for ‘religion’ (in the modern sense), but being irreligious (again, in the modern sense) could get one into tonnes of trouble with the state.

I think being pious is probably seen in societies where religion wasn’t regarded as a separate stand alone phenomenon in much the same way being humble is seen in our society.      It is not a specific requirement of religion, but a requirement for generally not being anti-social where religion is central and yet grades seamlessly into each aspect of social interaction.

If Xenophon is to be believed, Socrates was specifically charged with asebeia, or not believing in the state gods. It’s hard to not equate that with being irreligious.

Whether disbelieving gods whose favor is considered essential for the public good is regarded as criminal or not,  seems to have little direct beating  on whether the set of beliefs pertaining to these gods are considered to be separate distinct phenomenon deserving a name, or if these beliefs are seen as just part of wider general understanding of how things are, so as a mere subset does not merit a specific name.

I know I'm more out of touch than I thought myself yesterday.
I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Apparently, in the People’s Republic of China, in order to buy a car you have to enter a lottery for a license plate. Out of every thousand applicants, a total of THREE actually end up getting one.

And the roads are still crazy busy, especially during holiday season.

To blanch something - you bring the water to the boil, add salt and taste the water, when it tastes like sea water, it's right.

Last night, I had pasta in. I neglected the process and just dumped some salt in.

I oversalted my pasta so bad it was "nearly" unpalatable.

Go slow, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

I am slowly learning (after over salting loads and loads of stuff) that you should never neglect the basics in cooking - like "taste taste taste"

That does not easily reconcile with web search result that shows roughly 15 new cars per thousand people are sold in China each year, unless each person in China (not just the new car buyers) enter the new license plate lottery 5 times a year, or, if the license plate lottery can only be entered once per year per person, then 80% of the new cars must not need new license plates or would still remain unregistered.

Most of Emily Dickinson’s poems can be sung to the tune ‘The Yellow Rose of Texas’.
