After badly flubbing the basics on the inflationary effects of tariffs, Vance tried to argue that immigration is bad for the economy:

‘Housing costs are unaffordable ... people can’t afford to live a good life in this small Ohio town,’ he said. ‘If the path to prosperity was flooding your nation with low-wage immigrants, then Springfield, Ohio, would be ... the most prosperous city in the world,’ Vance said. ‘America would be the most prosperous country in the world, because Kamala Harris has flooded the country with 25 million illegal aliens.’”

So, a few things.

First, the “25 million illegal aliens” figure is ridiculously wrong. Given Vance’s apparent interest in immigration policy, it’s weird to see him struggle with such a basic detail.

Second, the vice president is not chiefly responsible for federal immigration laws — though she did endorse a bipartisan solution that Vance’s running mate killed, despite the legislation’s merits, because he was afraid helping the country might hurt his 2024 candidacy.

Third, while it’s true that housing costs in Springfield, Ohio, have gone up, it’s because the local economy is improving — despite Trump’s insane claims that the community has been destroyed by pet-eating immigrants.

Fourth, the idea that Springfield has suffered economically as a result of immigration is the exact opposite of what has actually happened in reality. As Vance really ought to know — he ostensibly represents Ohio — we’re talking about a community on the rise, not decline.

Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance in an interview Wednesday said he would “consider” plans to privatize parts of the Department of Veterans Affairs and push for more private-health care options for patients in the system if elected this fall.

In an appearance on the Shawn Ryan Show podcast released Wednesday, the Ohio senator (who is former President Donald Trump’s running mate) also said he would fire or cut thousands of federal civilian jobs, including many within VA.

“Probably 90% to 95% of the people at the VA are fantastic human beings, but then you’ve got a small slice of the VA [who are] bad apples that makes it really hard for everybody else to do their job,” he said.

“This is why veterans spend three hours on the phone trying to get an appointment. This is why you have people commit suicide, because they’re waiting 28 days to get an appointment with the doctor. It’s a small sliver of the VA, but you can fire those people, right? Give the people who are doing their job a raise. Fire the people who aren’t doing their jobs.”

Further proving he's an idiot, Vance proposes to improve VA service by cutting more staff. The long waits to set an appointment are a result of chronic understaffing. I generally get good care from the VA, and good treatment from its employees. Many of the VA's employees are veterans themselves, and are serious about delivering quality care.

So, his answer to absurdly long wait times with the VA is to cut the number of employees who can actually fulfill those appointments?

Both parties pay lip-service to us, but treat us like lemons -- once we're squeezed dry of juice, they throw us away and forget all their sweet words. That Trump is more blatant about it, and that Democrats try on occasion, is not a major deviance either way.

They don't care about us. We're useful for campaigns, and then put away on the back shelf for another three years until the next fuckhead needs to look patriotic.

One thing I like about Walz is that as a sergeant-major, he knows what it means to really look out for your folks. Hopefully Harris puts him in charge of VA oversight.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance ® and CBS News’ Margaret Brennan sparred on Sunday over a false claim of Haitian immigrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.

“I know the mayor of Springfield, a Republican, told ABC News, ‘We’ve been punched in a way we should not have been punched,” Brennan said on “Face the Nation.” “He said, ‘All these federal politicians that have negatively spun our city, they need to know they’re hurting our city, and it was their words who did it.’ Your words, sir. Do you regret them?”

“Margaret, we’ve been hearing about these problems for months, even in some cases, for years, and the problem here is not that Donald Trump and I have called out what’s happened to Springfield—”

“No, I have talked about the problems, and cited Governor DeWine saying more legitimate problems. I’m not asking about that. We have documented that. I’m asking about your words sir, which you are responsible for,” Brennan cut in, talking over Vance.

“But Margaret, you only documented it after Donald Trump called attention to it, and so look, with all respect to the Springfield mayor—” Vance said.

“You tweeted September 9th—” Brennan responded.

Vance also got into a heated back-and-forth with CNN’s “State of the Union” with anchor Dana Bash over the Haitian migrants claim Sunday. He amplified the false claim on Monday, and his running mate, former President Trump, referenced it in a debate with Vice President Harris on Tuesday.

“What they have done to our country by allowing these millions and millions of people to come into our country — and look at what’s happening to the towns [in the] United States, a lot of towns don’t want to talk,” Trump said in the debate. “Not going to be Aurora [or] Springfield. A lot of towns don’t want to talk about it because they’re so embarrassed by it. In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs.”
