That Anthony Perkins did so well playing Norman Bates because, frankly, he lived it. Not the murder or even the cross-dressing, but definitely the close-to-the-point-of-incestuous relationship with his mother that resulted in a degree of gynophobia so severe that there’s still serious debate about whether or not he was totally gay (given that he spent his first 39 years as a Kinsey 6 until Victoria Principal seduced him, I can see why people think that) or just a deeply traumatized bisexual (given that his relationship with Berry Berenson started when she was engaged to another man, and she went to the altar with his bun in her oven, I’m inclined to think that’s most likely.)

Fixing a shut off valve in our shower will cost $1200.

Maybe fix was wrong, replace. The old one is to corroded to be repaired. To replace they have to cut a larger hole for access in the wall, remove old hardware, replace, then waterproof the hole. Having PCV water pipes is part of the problem.

I didn't know that PVC pipe met the building code for water supply, especially hot. Do you have PEX, Mark?
Mine is all copper.

Oh, fair enough. Yeah, opening up a wall is pricey.

Maybe, I don't know what PEX is.
Just took a peak, appears to be half copper and half what looks like PVC, so probably this new fangled PEX stuff you refer to.
Stop smartifying me.

Stop smartifying me. Red and blue tubing would be PEX.

Not the colors I'm seeing. I'll ask the guy tomorrow.

I'm interested, too. PVC is white. Like I said, I'm not used to seeing PVC in supply plumbing, but I'm a hard core copper plumbing kind of guy. Copper is in the "buy once, cry once" category. I hope what you're getting is a decent, lasting repair. Maybe take a pic and post it before the wall is closed up? If you don't want to post it on the open internet, I can give you an email. One thing I really don't like is people getting ripped off.
