They could just as well be Mickey Mousists, except the Satan thing pisses off the Christians more. And I'm sure they're happy that their statue was broken, because it gets them more attention and gives them an opportunity to prosecute someone who was "oppressing" them. Political theater.

Their real beliefs are just what modern liberal Americans believe. 

This is in contrast to old-style European Satanists, who actually believed they were risking something, and weren't just grandstanding.

To be fair, Mickey Mouse is probably copyrighted, so it would be hard to get permission to use him in that way. Likewise Hello Kitty. 

Whereas Satan is in the public domain.

The Satanists are a curious group. Most of those I've encountered have more in common with Ayn Rand Objectivists than the humanistic worldview more commonly seen in atheists.

I definitely approve of their activity regarding violations of church-state separation. I believe their approach is much more effective than trying to prosecute violations. It's much simpler too. You can argue until you're blue in the face that displaying this or that Christian symbol in this or that public space is a violation and get nowhere. Display your own symbol right besides theirs though and it leaves them in a tough spot. It's a lot harder to defend why you should be able to do something while others should not be able to do exactly the same thing.

I think the Satanist approach also has the added value of frustrating and pissing off the holier-than-thou Christians too which is something I always take delight in.

Pointing out the hypocrisy  of the freedom of religion crowd and standing up against Christian attempts to impose their religion on everyone else is not persecution and the very real attempt by evangelical nutjobs to destroy the separation of church and state is oppression.

Yeah standing up for religious freedom and retaining the wall of separation of church and state is just "grandstanding." and Satanist are risking something we are all risking something when  evangelical nutjobs are allowed to rum amok.

Navy Moves to Discharge Christian Pilot a Year After Satan Statue Incident

The Navy is moving to discharge Michael Cassidy, a Christian veteran, for “extremist activity” after he destroyed a Satanic statue at Iowa’s State Capitol. Cassidy says his actions were motivated by faith, but officials claim they violated constitutional rights.

I was wrong when I said that American Satanists were all harmless cos-players.

A few years ago I saw a documentary about American Satanists who gave that impression. They were just liberals who thought it was clever to poke Christians in the eye. The kind of people who think the characters on the Big Bang Show are role models.

Recently however, I've learned that there are active groups of self-described Satanists who are a lot worse. They spread accelerationist and Neo-Nazi ideology on line. Some of them have been around for a long time. There is overlap with Incel groups who blame everyone else for their loser status. Some of them go on line to encourage young people to harm themselves or others. These are bad people.

It looks as though the most recent school shooter --- the young woman who shot up the Christian school -- was influenced by these people. This is just speculation at this point. Nor do I have any idea whether the Satanists who put up the statue at city hall are mixed up with the Neo-Nazi types. I don't know.

Let's just say that if your next door neighbor starts putting Satanist symbols on his front porch, you should proceed with caution.

It's more than that. In the documentary, they explain how they became Satanists, which is that Christians proclaimed them to be Satanists because they played games like Dungeons and Dragons, listened to forbidden music, watched scary movies, and then they doubled down on it instead of surrender.

Satanic Temple’s nativity display near state Capitol building vandalized for 2nd time

CONCORD, N.H. (WMUR) - For the second time in less than two weeks, the display put up by the Satanic Temple outside the New Hampshire Statehouse has been vandalized.

Corinne Stanley says she watched a man in sweats trash the statue.

“I mean, he seemed intent, at the very least, to destroy it, to tear it down,” Stanley described. “It takes a lot to bend a flag pole over your knee, so he was quite angry.”

The Satanic Temple, which touts core beliefs like compassion, justice and personal freedom, got a permit from the city of Concord for the nativity display.

“There are people around here who aren’t willing to allow people, such as myself, to express my religious views and the religious views of countless others who want to be able to celebrate and believe in what they believe in,” Satanic Temple member Bear Saxby said.
