What the almighty fuck is wrong with those people? Is this a goddamn virus? Just talked to a co-worker about assorted economic and political stuff (a right wing populist Afd fan, go figure), the facts of which are painfully obvious. These people dont even share a common universe of thought with the likes of me anymore. Have they always been such criminally gullible fools, did they never possess the ability of rational thought, did they just consume and repeat all their life what they have been told by the person they just find authoritative? Do they just have too much fucking imagination (which can be good: less need for drugs)?
Che and Mao?! One was a crazy dentist who died alone in the jungle, because not even south american campesinos wanted to listen to him, the other one was one of the most prolific dictators when it comes to killing people in general and killing his own people in particular. Hey, i got a book recommendation for you : "Mein Kampf". Lots of interesting insights! How about starting to read books about them, before you read books written by them?
Ukraine attacking russian infrastructure after four years of russian invasion. Russia attacked ukrainian infrastructure from day fucking one, on a broad scale. Grain? Russia tried to make ukrainians freeze to death every single winter for four years. It attacked supermarkets and hospitals with cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. It committed war crimes from day one, day after fucking day. Russia is guilty of systematic mass executions of ukrainian PoWs and civilians. Ukraine finally strikes back with drones and recently designed V1s. So fucking what? What the fuck did you expect? This, and your first and foremost concern is that/how Ukraine lost its innocence? Of course it did. Thats why wars are so fucking bad. Every party will lose its innocence Thats why everyone (but you and particularly our little friend from Nippon) points out how important it is to remember who the fuck started this war over which fucking bad reason, and whith which blatant lies about it ! Are you goddamn nuts!?

An iranian ship full of drone parts headed to russia gets hit by a nation that's been under attack by iranian made drones out of russia for four years and we think we need to invoke some shadowy conspiracy of zionist masters to explain it?
To return to Leo's analogy....it looks like the two pissants picked the wrong little kid to wail on, to me. Now one of them has two broken legs and the other a bloody nose. If that's all that happens to iran that would be a good outcome for iran...and all they have to do to make sure that's all that happens to them is..wait for it...stop helping russia attack ukraine.
The tragedy here is not that ukraine is fighting back, and no amount of contortions will ever make it so.

GrandNudger:
- Hitting Russian oil refineries also amount to war crimes. But I believe this is a line that can be crossed when Russia is using its most sophisticated high-tech missiles to hit Ukrainian Condos. That grain on the other hand is going to the Arab world, to Africa or even to Asia. I must remind you that the Russian were kind enough at the beginning of this conflict to let the Ukrainian grain flow to the rest of the world. So in a 21st century kind of conflict, is it too much to expect Zelensky to do the same?
Belaqua:
- No. I was one of those lucky kids in which differences actually made kids more interesting to their peers. In place where I grew up it was considered “cool” for instance to have a friend with typical Asian characteristics or to be picked up from school with an American-built automobile (I’m talking about the 1980’s)
But yes. I had those less lucky friends, from highly conservative families, in highly conservative schools, where the exact things you said made them more violent. Once grown up (nowadays I suppose) these kids get psychological issues or they are turned into foot soldiers. They may be engineers, doctors, teachers, public workers, even people who live abroad, being raised accordingly with these “conformity” issues, even in their 40’s they are still part of the brotherhood and need to act accordingly with these rules of conformity.
So no: What you say might have been partly true for baby boomers but our generation was already too individualistic and free.
Quote:“Here I think we have to be a little bit careful. Both of the books you mention were written long after the Samurai had lost their powers as a hereditary warrior class. The Samurai were converted to clerks and other less glamorous government functionaries. Inazo Nitobe wrote Bushido in English while living in America. It was first published in Philadelphia. So they may offer an attractive code for warriors, but they are a little like 19th century historical novelists writing about King Arthur's court. There's a lot of romanticizing going on.”
I don’t know much about these too. But Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of Aikido) who lived in the 20th century spent most of his life in Japan. It is true that Inazo nitobe was more of a scholar than a Samurai himself. And yamamoto Tsunemoto was actually a Samurai who lived in the late 1600 early 1700’s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamamoto_Tsunetomo
What matters here is that there is a “code”. Even the street bullies of the second part of the last century have some sort of codes with one another. They used to call this the “Radjon” (the unwritten rule than a bully has to follow otherwise he won’t be respected by anyone including the other bullies).
And this is to conclude that in any conflict situation you cannot have a “I will do anything to harm them” attitude. Because this is pure savagery not a way of carrying out conflict with the intention of reaching a desired outcome (like most humans do).
On Zionism:
- Maybe the current state of Zionism is a mixture of colonialism and religious extremism that is set to take us strait to WWIII. None of us will be able to know this until we see how the whole thing ends.
The problem for modern Zionism is that it lacks all forms of empathy. This type of lack of empathy is typical of religious fanatizm. And based on my basic knowledge of Judeo-Christian values I can add that this is not a very spiritual approach either.
See: Look at these Christian families in Lebanon who welcomed Shiite, Christian and other Muslim families into their homes when these had to flee the recent İsraeli incursion in southern Lebanon. So which one is it? Is there one set of Judeo-Christian values or are there several one of them?
DEsse23:
- You are right. Humanity has just come out of an age of ignorance and the Second age (or energy age) has just begun. I am feeling exactly as you do when I see that all the West Coast is now reachin above 100 degree temperatures and the President of the US is still calling Climate Change a “Socialist Hoax”
Belaqua:
Quote:“Nice photos today of Zelensky and Netanyahu smiling at each other in Washington.
Ukraine fired on an Iranian ship recently, so it's possible that Zelensky's masters are encouraging him to merge the two wars. I don't think it's wise for him to take on both Russia and Iran at the same time, but the whole plan isn't about doing what's best for Ukraine.”
- Again: that’s a legitimate target. Why Ukraine wouldn’t hit military ships circulating between Iran and Russia?

First….no. Hitting oil refineries is not a war crime. Secondly, lolno….Russia has never “been so kind” as to allow ukranian grain to flow. They e been stealing it, burning it, and destroying the shipping terminals and boats since the beginning. Finally…all of this bullshit about Russian grain is a farce from the beginning. It’s ukranian grain exports, when they could get through, that have been going to Africa and the Middle East. Ukraine has been pulling the fire alarm about this since the start and you just now notice because Russia is griping…..?
If we want to talk about the ethics of conflict and use the Russo ukranian war as a soundboard for that discussion that’s cool. It’s a worthy and difficult subject…but I’m going to insist that conversation take place in mere reality. Not whatever Russian simp fantasy keeps leaking out if you in these posts. I get it, you think Russia was or meant something. Stood for something…once…sometime. Fine. Right now it’s terrorist state crying to anyone who’ll listen because the girl it tried to rape is brutalizing the rapist, instead. They can make it stop whenever they want, you know…..

Let’s try a softball on the ethics of conflict. Do we believe that invading a neighboring country in order to maintain one’s own position of domestic power is an ethical use of military force? Do we believe that the use of expeditionary military force is a prudent avenue for resolving domestic problems in general? Like….say I do t have as many bananas as I want…and I’ve got a banana buyer lined up…and you have a few bananas. How do you feel about me busting down your door at o dark thirty, shooting your son, fucking your wife, taking your bananas, burning your house down, then selling the real estate to my cousin? How sympathetic would you be to my cause if…in the course of this…I complained about you taking a swing at me?
Now, maybe you’re not so much worried about me…but about the hardships my family would suffer when my hare-brained scheme failed? What if I told my family that I planned a smash and grab. That I could finish it up in a few days, maybe a month, and they’d all share in the loot….called you a Jewish nazi for the lulz…and they cheered for it?
What do you think the ethical angles are on something like that?

Arent you a Turk, shouldn't you know better than anyone of us? Arent you reading newspapers, other than Russian state controlled outlets? You commending Russia for being so "kind" to allow for grain shipping is like commending a rapist to interrupt his rape, for a while, after a while. During the first two years of the war there has been long negotiations on that subject: Ukrainians had to take their grain through Romanian ports or they had to sell it in Europe causing huge unrest among European producers. All I am saying in that it is normal for wars to become gradually more civilized. Because oil refineries have a dual purpose (both military and civilian) it is not 100% clear weather hitting them is a war crime or not. But I still think it would be ok for Ukraine and the rest of the world to not hit Russian grain ships. This is a serious issue: You can’t send all that grain to the bottom of the sea while there are living skeletons in other parts of the world who depend on that food for their very survival.
Also:
This not so normal person called Donald Trump has wasted almost all of his Missiles on Iran:
https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/arti...39538.html
Why are Iranian oil production sites still standing?
(And that’s a very personal question: I mean if it’s not a war crime to hit these facilities why isn’t he obliterating them all at once? )

- Yes Russia is a fascist state. And I agree this as someone who knows many Russians and appreciates them as a culture. But I don’t know if Putin himself knows about the evil he did to his very own country and that’s all I am going to say on that issue.

I said exactly what I said. The reason why I have absolutely no problem at all with atheism is that atheist are very clear about what they say. They mean what they say and most of them act accordingly with what they say. Can I say the same with theists in general?
- The answer is no.
Grand NUdger:
Quote:“ (…) What do you think the ethical angles are on something like that?”
- War is an awful thing that shouldn’t happen at all. But my answer to that is this:
Everyone in this world needs a standing army. I used to be very anti-army / anti-war when I was younger. Now this has changed a lot. I truly believe we all need our soldiers. I mean soldiers who are there to protect our freedom and way of life.
So we are back where we have started: What are the ethics of conflict in the 21st century?
