I just bought a new laptop about three weeks ago, and the reinstall of Steam and my games library went off without a hitch. Even managed to break the British at sea and occupy both England and Ireland.
Do you use Darthmod? Somewhat harder.
Although I usually play as France, too, and can usually manage to beat the British.
I haven't played it in about a year. I need to go back to try again.
