Hi all.
Hello all, just registered on this site. I am a freethinker, atheist and engineerBig Grin

I also post on some other Atheist Debate forums too. My experience is that you can debate all you want with a theist and never have them gain an understanding of your point! I think they must be wired differently or the truth is too much for them.

I look forward to debating/discussing with you all. Cheers, H.

Welcome! May you find more truth!
Oh and by the way, yes I agree, it is very hard to argue with theists. I am starting to understand that I think we need them to give us evidence of their God before we can really get into a conversation about scripture with them. Because you often end up going round and round in circles and in the end it all comes down to the same Question "What evidence is there of your God?"

Thank you for the welcome.

Asking the theist to prove that their god exists is one way to start the debate with them. But as you and I know, this burden of proof, will never be answered because they cannot physically prove it because we know they can't!

What I have found is to question their belief by questioning their scriptures of which most theist's have never really read anyway. What it all boils down to is their personal belief and faith of which you can never really get them to change as they have been brainwashed or as I said earlier, they are wired differently. Also, in their mind in my opinion, if there isn't a god, what is the point of life. That is the scary part, they do not understand that this is it. What they do in their lives is just that, there are no afters. Therefore their god is their judge and are not held accountable for their actions, which means they can get away with anything in this life because they are doing it mainly in gods name........ so much for their belief in free will.

The best bit, I have found, is that their scriptures are contradictory and watch them squirm as you get them to defend a certain stance then hit them with a zinger from their scripture which contradicts and undermines their position or belief.

As I said in my first post, looking forward to debating/discussing on here.

Once again, thanks for the welcome.Cool

Yes you're very welcome.
Oh and I would say that if the theist can't provide evidence and we just talk about scriptures with them, in the end it will come down to us saying "But there's no evidence for that is there? What evidence is there?" and they'll keep giving false evidence and when all else fails they will say "well I have faith", so we just go round and round in circles. So I'd rather keep getting them to try and provide evidence.
Yes they can't provide the evidence, that's the whole point, the fact all the evidence they give is false just shows up how wrong they are. If we get into scriptures and morality etc then it always comes down to us needing to inquire "Evidence please.".
And again, you're welcome.

Hello, H3rod, and welcome! I know how you feel about arguing theist I have the same problem and I am a theist. Of course I also have the same problem with atheist. I think it is a people thing rather than a theist thing. We are all wired pretty much the same Wink

Most people are wired incorrectly. I see atheism as a rewiring of the way we think and understand things.

Actually I think you may have a point, people can be evangelistic about many things (not always religion) and I've noted that when they are the kind of tactics adopted are much the same ... IMO it's down to what something Michael Shermer (a leading secularist) said which is (paraphrased) that people believe stupid things for all kinds of reasons and intelligent people will often defend stupid ideas intelligently.

RE: Hi all.
Hi H3rod, I'm quite new too and am finding the folk here very friendly and open to discussing my opinions. I think you may have a point about the 'wiring' thing, and I must say to Adrian, that I second Daystar and say 'very interesting'. As a 'Christian' I wouldn't dream of discussing the Bible here as it would be pointless- there is no real proof that will convince someone that what it claims is true, and hence why 'faith' is needed (plus all the other weird stuff in there). What I am interesting in discussing here (and really appreciate everyone's feedback), is 'intelligent design'. So I'll see in the threads no doubt.

Regards Catherine
