My Debating Tactic

For all my friends here (Christian and Atheists alike), I want to make something clear from my side. I usually don't use references from our Good Book - Bible while debating here. Reason for this is that I don't want to see myself trying to proselytize others. It's against the rules here, I suppose and I want to really discuss things within the confines of the rules. That being said, you all do realize that the True Word of God has stood the test of time so in rare cases, I may need to reference the Good Book.

But my unicorn book says that unicorns exist and that they are the one true god, why? Because it says so... If that sounds stupid to you, then you will understand why we think what you are saying sounds stupid...

The thing is, when I am confronted with an issue, I dont get to having my view on that issue through debate.

But through research.

Newspaper articles are structured a specific way, in order to increase their reader's interest, starting with an attention getting headline, followed by the main details of the story in the first paragraph, then the rest of the paragraphs go into detail on the points mentioned in the first paragraph. All writing takes into account genre, sub-genre, audience, format and structure. Even research papers and technical writing have to use strategy and tactics. Older master painters used to paint their works, not only with an eye to the composition itself, but many times also to fit the frame chosen, the lighting where they knew their painting would be displayed, and even according to what paintings would be hung next to their painting. Effective communication doesn't happen by chance, usually. If you're a talented writer, good; if you're a talented writer who knows how to use his words strategically, better.

Newspaper articles arent legitemate sources in any kind of way, since the internet papers have moved from giving a cold and clear display of the facts to publishing opinion pieces.
I actualy regulary visit the sites of ministeries, like the minestry of energy or justice when trying to get an unbiased account of facts.
Sometimes I compare opinion texts with oposing opinions. But generaly, I am not the kind of person who is comforted with any kind of biased report.
And I am lucky in this case, since the German press has a reputation of simply ripping everything to shreds and not reporting positively about anything.
On research papers,...... mhm I partialy disagree, research conducted by a political think tank will of course be biased and maybe even completly inconclusive.
But especialy universities deliever unbiased research and studies.

I didnt even realise there was a rule against preaching or using bible verses, it makes sense to me if youre going to argue about the bible to use bible verses, several atheist and muslim arguments against christianity are based on bible verses anyway.

There's nothing wrong with making reference to the bible, the kerrang, or whatever 'holy' text might be under discussion, but simply parroting scripture in place of actual argument, or as though they represent reality when such has not been demonstrated, is frowned on if only because it highlights that you don't actually have an argument. Using such quotes as a weapon purely in order to 'save' or condemn someone is right out, though all cases have to be judged individually.

We had a quite strict rule against preaching, but it was made more relaxed recently. And bible verses can be used, for instance it's appropriate to use them in a thread about said book. But if someone textwalls bible quotes and starts telling everyone how sinful/dirty/horrible etc etc persons we are and how much we deserve to go to hell/burn forever/get tortured, then the banhammer wielding begins
