Hawass possibly did some questionable things while he held his previous position, and a lot of Egyptologists didn't really think highly of his skills as an archaeologist. Many didn't approve of his management style either. That doesn't mean he wasn't good at his job though.

He is/was an arrogant bastard. Sometimes you need that though. After all, one of the things he was doing was running around convincing foreign museums to return Egyptian artifacts that they had stolen fair and square. Now, he can sit back and watch the cretins of the Islamic Brotherhood declare them "idols" and destroy them because of fucking allah.

Hawass... now that's a name I've not heard in a looong time. A long time...
Never could stand the bloke.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

And in a move of breathtaking parsimony decided to encapsulate all those fields of study into simple phrases about the heavens and Earth being clove asunder etc. Sheer genius!
