I bet Tony Abbott will keep his kids at home when bible-reading-class gets around to Leviticus chapter 26.

That bit (v 29) where god talks about forcing sinners to eat their own children is enough to make any youngster feel a bit queasy.

I think the some understanding of christianity should be taught, but not in a history class... maybe in something like a humanities class where you understand what the beleifs has to do with the time and with the arts, literature, etc. I don't even know if you should teach that in public school though, I think its better suited for a college course.

Think the Bible should be taught in school, but not in the way most Christians would want it to be taught. As Adrian mentioned, it should be taught in a historical and literature based context that does not attempt to preach the Bible, but teach what it is, who wrote it, what is it's significance, etc...

Same should be done for any other religious book, the Koran, the book of Morman. And the classes should be optional.

Religious history should be taught, that how major events happened and what effect did they have on culture and stuff. Teaching and preaching are two different things.
