The God Delusion

Compared to other books Richard Dawkins has written The God Delusion was by far one of his weakest. Dawkins while a first rate biologist, is nowhere as good when it comes to philosophy.

By contrast Victor Stenger (who is a retired particle physicist) is more adept in philosophy than Dawkins is. Instead of The God Delusion I would recommend reading both

God: Failed Hypothesis. How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist
and

Quantum Gods: Creation, Chaos, and the Search for Cosmic Consciousness

After reading those books I would also recommend reading Stengers other works.

God and the Atom
The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning: Why the Universe Is Not Designed for Us

Richard Dawkins is a good writer (I love The Ancestor's Tale, and his work in memetics has played more of a role in my graduate level work in political science than you might expect on the surface), so I was expecting a lot more from the book than I got out of it. There are a few valid points and some good insights, but for the most part, The God Delusion is really only as popular as it is because of the controversy surrounding it. Out of all the "New Atheist" writers, my favorite is probably Daniel Dennett. I actually learned something while reading Breaking the Spell, which is a lot more than I can say about Dawkins' book.

this makes some people think he is an authority on atheism.

There are no fucking gods. There. I am as much of an authority on atheism as Dawkins. He, OTOH, knows a shitload more about biology and evolution than I do.
