You know those study buy-bulls that some of the christers have? The ones with all the sticky notes and highlighting? Yeah, I have one of those. Mine isn't highlighted quite the same as the christers though. I actually have several buy-bulls. The one my mom gave me when I was a kid (the afore mentioned study buy-bull), the last study buy-bull my mom used before dying and the family buy-bull that my brothers would be super pissed about if they knew. One I keep because it's useful, the others for sentimental value.

Maybe one day you can have a little burning ceremony for him.
Maybe he knows you enjoy comedy and gave it to you so you could have a good laugh.

RIGHT!? Not all that it is good for, but definitely important. It's also good for studying comparative religions (same as the Koran, Vedas, Avesta, etc). Studying mythology. Studying ancient Greek, Aramaic, Hebrew. Things it's not good for: Describing reality accurately. Source of morality. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
I had two Bibles both given to me by relatives. Both much worn through use at Bible camp, Sunday school, and confirmation classes. I've passed those on to my daughters (skeptics both just like me)
I have an NIV, an NRSV, a KJ, and a JPS Torah. I use them when talking to Christians who don't really know what's in them or who don't understand the agenda behind the version they use. But there's no need for them. Bible Gateway has about twenty possibilities including the NOG (it uses the names for god without translating them to god or lord) which is a real eye opener for anyone interested in the development of the concept of god.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
Pointing out the fallacies in the Bible won't help. My stepmother is of the complete foolish kind and if you point things like this out to her she will just recite things preacher's says even though she does not understand them. She puts up an aura of false intelligence and appeals to authority a lot with no clue of what is being said.
Her favorite one to use is something Creflo Dollar said: "statement of truth is not a statement of fact". Something like that, I cannot recall the specifics of it but it is stupid nonetheless. On top of this she like many other people will get their facts wrong about everything. She does not even know that evolution is a scientific theory and she thinks that it is a prerequisite for atheism. She even thinks that Muhammad is the Hindu god? Like seriously, what the hell. When it comes to older people they tend to be more ignorant on matters and in my case my stepmother is just very immoral and has the Christian mindset which often includes excessive lying, even to her own children. I would not even bother arguing with a person who is overly religious because they will just lie if their religion is dogmatic like Islam or Christianity |
