Sydney would probably be better for you... "The Universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements: energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest." G'Kar-B5
I recently left Christianity. I took about two years to shake off all of the fears and superstitions. I have never felt better in my life. However, I now find MYSELF in Jesusland without friends and unable to speak freely of politics and religious issues. I am in Arkansas! Every day it is Jesus this Jesus that, praise god, etc.
My friends are still there but I am SURE they would drop me if I even mention that I am an atheist. I want out of the BIBLE BELT!
I don't blame you!!
Welcome along as well
Welcome Qathee
Fear and superstition is anti Christian. Perhaps you could point out to your friends their hypocrisy? I feel for ya. when I de-converted I felt homicidal towards Christians. I needed a break. Character building stuff for you I suppose, but I completely understand your feeling. RE: Stuck in the land of Jesus

Locnar, I live in the Bible Belt of the U.S....
I know exactly what you are going through and I understand about the kids situation etc. I have raised my children to be free thinkers and luckily they are. What they had to learn on their own was the separation of when to be open to others and when not to be. Just raise them how you feel they should be raised and everything else will fall into place....

Fr0d0, Fear and Superstition should be the motto and trademark stamped in-front of every Church. Our money in the U.S. should actually read...
IN FEAR WE TRUST......

I too am a Yankee in the Bible Belt, although I did spend some time down here in my teens. What "they" will do is witness to you. You will hear how someone was once a shit his whole life, found Jesus, and now doesn't wear wife beater shits or drink etc. etc. Then you will get a Bible (KJV) as a present. "They" invite you to church. They best Southern Baptists have to go twice a week, Sunday and Wednesday. If you go, Wednesday is generally pot luck, so bring a dish. If their church doesn't have a pot luck dinner, find one that does, it is well worth it for the bananna puddding and red velvet cake alone. They don't mind you being an atheist, because they expect to convert you. After a few years when you don't convert, some of your friends drop out. However, if you go out of your way to be friendly and helpful, unlike typical yankees, they will think Jesus is in you anyway, and your atheism is all an act. DON"T MOW YOUR LAWN ON SUNDAY MORNING!!!
