Actually, a Brit, named john Darby, more or less invented the modern iteration of the concept.

You see, we Americans are too dumb to have actually invented many of the idiotic concepts by which we've became known as yokels of the world. You Europeans were responsible for many of the duesies, and then shirked responsibility by driving the consequences to the new world.
